The Spire of a Hundred Veils is a legendary tower labyrinth that pierces the sky, said to contain one hundred floors of shifting chambers, ancient guardians, and impossible architecture. For centuries, it has been sealed, but now its doors have opened, and something within has begun to stir. Strange omens ripple across the land: birds fly in spirals, mirrors show rooms that do not exist, and sleepers dream of climbing endless stairs.

The adventurers are drawn to the tower by visions, promises, or duty, and must enter its lower floors to discover why the Spire has awakened. What begins as an expedition into a mysterious ruin soon reveals a deeper threat: the tower is not merely a dungeon, but a prison, and its warden has been corrupted by the very power he was meant to contain. The first act takes place in the tower's foundation levels, where the party must secure a foothold, uncover the first clues about the Spire's true purpose, and learn that a far greater evil waits at the top.

Player Handout

You have each been haunted by the same dream for seven nights: a black tower with a hundred windows, each one lit by a different colored flame. In the dream, a voice made of stone whispers, 'The doors are open. The stairs remember your name.' When you wake, you find a small, smooth key of black glass in your hand, cold as winter water. It hums faintly when you face the distant mountains.

Travelers speak of the Spire of a Hundred Veils, a tower that has stood sealed for generations. Now, its gates have opened, and the dreams are calling you there. You are not the only ones who have heard the call. Something waits inside, and it knows you are coming.

The Spire of a Hundred Veils

Behind the screen

Act I: The Threshold of the Spire. The party arrives at the base of the Spire of a Hundred Veils, navigates the ruined gatehouse, and descends into the first three floors. They face the tower's initial guardians, discover traces of previous expeditions, and encounter the first signs of the Warden's corruption. The act ends with a confrontation against a minor lieutenant of the Warden and the revelation that the Spire is a prison for something ancient and terrible.

Adventure Hooks

Hook 01

The Dreaming Key

Each character has received a black glass key in a recurring dream. The key hums when pointed toward the Spire and grows warm as they approach. The dream voice promises answers to a personal question if they climb the tower. This hook works best for characters with unresolved backstory mysteries or a desire for forbidden knowledge.

Hook 02

The Missing Expedition

Three weeks ago, a well-funded expedition led by the scholar-adventurer Elara Voss entered the Spire to map its lower floors. They have not returned. The party is hired by Elara's patron, a nervous merchant lord named Corvin Hale, to find the expedition or recover its research notes. The promised reward is generous, but Hale seems more interested in a specific artifact the expedition was sent to retrieve.

Act Structure

Act I: The Threshold of the Spire

Recommended level: 1-3

The party arrives at the Spire of a Hundred Veils, drawn by dreams and rumors. They enter the shattered gatehouse, fight off the tower's corrupted guardians, and begin their ascent. On the first three floors, they discover traces of a missing expedition, learn that the tower is a prison for an ancient being, and confront the Warden's lieutenant. The act ends with the party securing a foothold in the tower and learning that the true enemy is not the Warden, but the Veiled Sovereign he serves.

Objectives

  • Reach the Spire and enter through the shattered gatehouse
  • Secure a safe area on Floor 1
  • Explore Floor 2 and recover the expedition's supplies
  • Confront the Warden's lieutenant on Floor 3
  • Recover the expedition's research notes and learn the tower's secret

The Desolate Approach

The valley leading to the Spire

Read aloud

The path to the Spire winds through a valley of gray grass and twisted trees. The tower rises before you, impossibly tall, its upper floors lost in the clouds. The air grows colder with every step, and the only sound is the crunch of your boots on the frozen ground. In the distance, the shattered gatehouse waits, its broken archway like a gaping mouth.

Running this scene

This scene establishes the atmosphere and gives the party a chance to prepare. They may encounter a lone traveler fleeing the tower, who warns them of the wolves and the whispering. A successful DC 12 Wisdom (Survival) check reveals that the valley is unnaturally quiet; no birds, no insects, no wind. The black glass keys grow warm as they approach the tower.

Checks
  • DC 12 Wisdom (Survival) to notice the unnatural silence
  • DC 13 Intelligence (Arcana) to identify the faint violet glow on the tower's runes as a sign of psychic corruption
  • DC 10 Charisma (Persuasion) to calm the fleeing traveler and learn what he saw
Clues
  • The traveler saw wolves with glowing eyes near the gatehouse
  • The tower's runes pulse with violet light, a sign of the Sovereign's influence
  • The black glass keys hum in unison when pointed at the tower
Where next
  • The party follows the path to the shattered gatehouse, where the wolves are waiting.

The Shattered Gatehouse

The entrance to the Spire

Read aloud

The gatehouse is a ruin of fallen stone and broken arches. Mist coils around the rubble, and the air is thick with the smell of old blood. Three wolves with glowing violet eyes step from the shadows, their movements silent and coordinated. Behind them, the inner doors of the tower stand ajar, revealing a darkness that seems to breathe.

Running this scene

This scene contains the first combat encounter. The wolves are corrupted by the Sovereign's influence and fight to the death. After the battle, the party can search the gatehouse and find the chalk markings left by the previous expedition. The inner doors are heavy but unlocked; they swing open with a groan, revealing the first floor.

Checks
  • DC 12 Wisdom (Perception) to spot the wolves before they attack
  • DC 13 Intelligence (Arcana) to identify the violet glow as psychic corruption
  • DC 12 Wisdom (Animal Handling) to realize the wolves are acting against their nature
Clues
  • The wolves' eyes glow violet, a sign of the Sovereign's influence
  • Chalk markings on the wall indicate a safe path through the first floor
  • A torn satchel contains a crude map of Floor 1 and a silver locket
Where next
  • The party passes through the inner doors and enters Floor 1: The Hall of Echoes.

The Hall of Echoes

Floor 1 of the Spire

Read aloud

The first floor of the Spire is a vast hall of black stone, its ceiling lost in shadow. The walls are carved with spiraling patterns that seem to move when you look away. Every sound you make echoes strangely, as if the hall is listening. In the center of the room, a circle of pale light falls from a single high window, illuminating a pile of discarded gear and a chalk-drawn map on the floor.

Running this scene

This scene is an exploration and investigation scene. The party can search the hall, find the previous expedition's campsite, and learn more about the tower. The hall is safe for now, but the party should feel watched. A successful DC 13 Intelligence (Investigation) check reveals that the expedition left in a hurry, abandoning some supplies. The chalk map shows the layout of Floors 1-3, with a note: 'The stairs move. Mark your path.'

Checks
  • DC 13 Intelligence (Investigation) to find the expedition's hidden cache
  • DC 12 Wisdom (Perception) to notice the faint whispering that follows the party
  • DC 14 Intelligence (History) to recognize the tower's architecture as pre-imperial, built by an ancient order of wardens
Clues
  • The expedition left in a hurry, abandoning supplies
  • The chalk map shows the layout of Floors 1-3 and warns that the stairs move
  • The tower's architecture is ancient, built by an order of wardens
Where next
  • A hidden stairway behind a false wall leads down to Floor 2: The Gallery of Mirrors.

The Gallery of Mirrors

Floor 2 of the Spire

Read aloud

The gallery is a long hall lined with mirrors in tarnished silver frames. Your reflections do not match your movements; some mirrors show empty rooms, others show figures climbing endless stairs. At the far end, two suits of armor stand on stone pedestals, their visors dark. As you step forward, their joints creak, and they turn to face you.

Running this scene

This scene contains the second combat encounter. The animated armor is programmed to attack intruders. After the battle, the party can examine the mirrors and find a hidden compartment. The mirrors also show a vision of the missing expedition: a woman in scholar's robes being led upward by shadowy figures. This is a key clue that the expedition was captured, not killed.

Checks
  • DC 13 Intelligence (Investigation) to find the hidden compartment behind a mirror
  • DC 12 Wisdom (Perception) to notice that the mirrors show scenes from the tower's past
  • DC 14 Intelligence (Arcana) to identify the armor's enchantment as a warding spell
Clues
  • The mirrors show a vision of the missing expedition being led upward
  • The hidden compartment contains a Potion of Healing and a protective scroll
  • The armor's enchantment is a warding spell, keyed to the Warden's sigil
Where next
  • A spiral staircase at the end of the gallery descends to Floor 3: The Sunken Archive.

The Sunken Archive

Floor 3 of the Spire

Read aloud

The archive opens before you, a vast chamber sunk into the floor, its bookshelves toppled like fallen trees. At the center, a woman in dark robes stands before a cracked crystal orb that pulses with violet light. Two skeletal figures flank her, their bones clicking as they turn. 'You should not have come,' she says, her voice echoing with a second, deeper tone. 'The Sovereign is waking, and the tower will be its throne.'

Running this scene

This scene contains the climactic combat encounter of Act I. Seris, the Warden's lieutenant, fights to the death. After the battle, the crystal orb shatters, and the party hears a distant, satisfied whisper. The expedition's research notes are found on a nearby lectern, revealing that the tower's floors shift and that the Warden's control is weakening. A silver key opens a hidden door behind the dais, leading to a stairway upward.

Checks
  • DC 14 Charisma (Persuasion) to make Seris hesitate for one round
  • DC 13 Intelligence (Investigation) to find the research notes on the lectern
  • DC 15 Intelligence (Arcana) to understand the nature of the crystal orb
Clues
  • Seris speaks with a second, deeper voice, a sign of the Sovereign's influence
  • The research notes reveal that the tower's floors shift and the Warden is failing
  • The silver key opens a hidden stairway to Floor 4
Where next
  • The hidden stairway leads upward to Floor 4, where Act II will begin.

Milestone: The party has secured a foothold in the Spire, recovered the expedition's research notes, and defeated the Warden's lieutenant. They have learned that the tower is a prison for the Veiled Sovereign and that the Warden is a tragic figure, corrupted by the very power he was meant to contain. The party reaches 3rd level at the end of this act.

Villain Plans

The Warden of the Spire Character Sheet

Central Villain of Act I

Motivation

The Warden was once a mortal mage named Aldric Vane, who volunteered to become the eternal guardian of the Spire of a Hundred Veils. His mind has been slowly eroded by the whispers of the Veiled Sovereign, the ancient being imprisoned at the top of the tower. He now believes that the only way to contain the Sovereign is to serve it, and he has begun to open the tower's lower floors to draw in new victims. He sees the party not as enemies, but as potential servants or sacrifices.

Personality

The Warden is cold, patient, and deeply tragic. He speaks in a slow, measured tone, as if every word costs him effort. He genuinely believes he is protecting the world, even as he commits terrible acts. He is not cruel for its own sake, but he is utterly convinced that his path is the only one. He regards the party with a mixture of pity and disappointment, as if they are children who cannot understand the burden he carries.

Resources

  • Control over the tower's lower defenses, including animated armor and magical traps
  • A network of corrupted servants, including acolytes and creatures touched by the Sovereign's influence
  • Knowledge of the tower's shifting floors and hidden passages
  • A fragment of the Veiled Sovereign's power, granting him limited telepathy and the ability to scry on intruders

Battle Plan

The Warden does not fight the party directly in Act I. Instead, he observes them through the tower's mirrors and sends his lieutenant, Seris, to test them. If the party defeats Seris, the Warden speaks to them through the shattered crystal orb, offering them a choice: leave the tower and live, or continue climbing and face the consequences. He is not yet ready to confront them personally, but he will remember their faces.

Defeat or Redemption

The Warden can be defeated in a later act, but he can also be redeemed. If the party can find a way to sever his connection to the Veiled Sovereign, he may remember who he once was and turn against his master. In Act I, the party should learn that the Warden is not the true enemy, but a victim of the Sovereign's influence. This revelation sets up the larger conflict of the campaign.

Running Notes

Recommended party: A balanced party of four 1st-level characters is recommended. A Fighter or Paladin for front-line defense, a Rogue or Ranger for scouting and traps, a Cleric or Druid for healing and support, and a Wizard or Sorcerer for arcane power and investigation. Characters with proficiency in Arcana, History, Investigation, or Perception will find many opportunities to shine in the tower's early floors.

Session Zero

Before starting the campaign, discuss the tone and themes with your players. The Spire of a Hundred Veils is a dungeon crawl with elements of psychological horror and tragic villainy. The tower is a place of mystery and danger, but it is not gratuitously grim. The Warden is a sympathetic villain, and the party may have opportunities to redeem him in later acts. Establish that the party will be exploring a single, massive dungeon for most of the campaign, and that resource management and careful exploration will be important. Ask each player to decide how their character received the black glass key and what question they hope the tower will answer. This will help tie their personal stories to the campaign's central mystery.

Scaling Guidance

Act I is designed for a party of four 1st-level characters, advancing to 3rd level by the end of the act. For a party of three, reduce the number of wolves in the Gatehouse Ambush to two, remove one Skeleton from the Warden's Lieutenant encounter, and reduce Seris's hit points by 10. For a party of five or six, add one additional Wolf per two extra characters, add one additional Animated Armor to the Mirror Gallery, and give Seris the Bless spell. For a higher-level party starting at 2nd or 3rd level, increase the wolves to Dire Wolves, replace the Animated Armor with Helmed Horrors, and give Seris the Spiritual Weapon spell.

DM Advice

The Spire of a Hundred Veils is a living dungeon. Emphasize the tower's shifting nature: doors that were open are now closed, stairs that led up now lead down, and rooms that were empty are now occupied. The party should never feel completely safe. Use the mirrors and echoes to create atmosphere and deliver clues. The Warden is watching, and he will speak to the party through the tower's magic. Keep his voice calm and patient, never angry. The Veiled Sovereign's influence should feel like a slow, creeping corruption, not a sudden reveal. Drop hints about the Sovereign's nature throughout Act I, but do not reveal its true form until much later in the campaign.

Secrets & Clues

  • The Spire of a Hundred Veils is not a natural tower; it was built by an ancient order of wardens to imprison a being called the Veiled Sovereign.
  • The black glass keys are fragments of the tower's original locking mechanism, broken and scattered when the Warden first attempted to open the prison.
  • The missing expedition was not killed by monsters; they were captured by the Warden's servants and taken to the upper floors.
  • The Warden was once a mortal mage named Aldric Vane, who volunteered to become the tower's eternal guardian. His mind has been slowly eroded by the Sovereign's whispers.

Encounters

Gatehouse Ambush

Suggested Level: 1

As the party approaches the shattered gatehouse of the Spire, they are ambushed by a pack of wolves driven mad by the tower's leaking magic. The wolves' eyes glow faintly violet, and they fight with unnatural coordination. The gatehouse itself provides cover and choke points, with fallen pillars and rubble creating difficult terrain.

Creatures

Terrain Features

Fallen stone pillars provide half cover. Rubble-filled areas are difficult terrain. A collapsed archway creates a natural choke point. The gatehouse floor is slick with mist, imposing no mechanical penalty but adding atmosphere.

Treasure

A torn satchel containing 15 GP, a silver locket with a faded portrait, and a scrap of parchment with a crude map of the first floor.

DM Notes

The wolves are not ordinary animals; they have been touched by the Veiled Sovereign's influence. A successful DC 12 Wisdom (Animal Handling) check reveals they are acting against their nature. A DC 13 Intelligence (Arcana) check identifies the violet glow as a sign of psychic corruption. The wolves fight to the death but will not pursue beyond the gatehouse threshold.

The Mirror Gallery

Suggested Level: 2

On Floor 2, the party enters a long gallery lined with tall mirrors. The mirrors do not reflect the room; instead, they show distorted versions of the party, or empty rooms, or scenes from the tower's past. As the party moves through the gallery, two suits of animated armor step from their pedestals and attack. The mirrors themselves are harmless unless touched, but they can distract or confuse.

Creatures

Terrain Features

The gallery is 60 feet long and 20 feet wide. Mirrors line both walls. A shattered mirror creates a patch of difficult terrain. The pedestals provide half cover. The floor is polished stone, and the room is dimly lit by flickering sconces.

Treasure

A hidden compartment behind one mirror contains a Potion of Healing and a scroll of Protection from Evil and Good.

DM Notes

The animated armor is programmed to attack anyone who does not bear the Warden's sigil. A successful DC 13 Intelligence (Investigation) check reveals that the armor's movements are slightly delayed, as if controlled by a distant mind. The mirrors can be used creatively: a character can shove an enemy into a mirror, which shatters and deals 1d4 slashing damage. The mirrors also show brief glimpses of the missing expedition, including a woman in scholar's robes being led upward by shadowy figures.

The Warden's Lieutenant

Suggested Level: 2-3

At the heart of Floor 3, the party confronts the Warden's lieutenant, a corrupted acolyte named Seris who has been twisted by the Veiled Sovereign's whispers. Seris is guarded by two skeletons animated by the tower's magic. She fights with a mix of spells and a ceremonial dagger, and she taunts the party with fragments of the truth: the tower is a prison, the Warden is failing, and the Sovereign is waking.

Creatures

Terrain Features

The chamber is a sunken archive, with bookshelves toppled into heaps. The floor is uneven, with several steps leading down to a central dais. A large, cracked crystal orb on the dais pulses with violet light. The bookshelves provide half cover, and the steps are difficult terrain when moving upward.

Treasure

The expedition's research notes, a Wand of Magic Missiles, and a silver key that opens the hidden stairway to Floor 4.

DM Notes

Seris is not the Warden himself, but a devoted servant. She believes she is saving the tower by serving the Sovereign. A successful DC 14 Charisma (Persuasion) check might convince her to hesitate for one round, but she cannot be turned from her path. When she is defeated, the crystal orb shatters, and the party hears a distant, satisfied whisper. The research notes reveal that the tower's floors shift, and that the Warden's control is weakening.

Magic Items

Wand of Magic Missiles Wand of Magic Missiles Completed

Wand of Magic Missiles

Uncommon
This slender wand of dark wood is carved with tiny runes that pulse faintly when the wand is held. It has 7 charges. While holding it, you can use an action to expend 1 or more of its charges to cast the Magic Missile spell. For 1 charge, you cast the 1st-level version of the spell. You can increase the spell slot level by one for each additional charge you expend. The wand regains 1d6 + 1 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the wand's last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the wand crumbles into ashes and is destroyed.
