Tactics

• Use Ledger Glare to control the battlefield by punishing foes that get too close.
• Employ Hypnotic Charm on targets to turn them into unwitting allies against their friends.
• Target weaker opponents first with Ledger Strike to reduce numbers quickly.

Combat Style

It prefers to maintain distance, using psychic attacks to wear down opponents and charm them towards infighting.

Morale

The Ledgerfiend maintains its confidence as long as it can control the encounter; however, if it takes significant damage, it may retreat mysteriously, vanishing into the pages it commands.

Monster Description

The Ledgerfiend is a cunning and sinister spirit born from the unreconciled debts and broken promises of those who were too greedy to pay their dues. Often found lurking in the shadows of commerce, it thrives on the emotions tied to wealth and greed, and can manifest in various forms, often taking on a humanoid aspect cloaked in writing and pages that float around it like a cloud. Its presence can bring prosperity but also doom, for it exacts payment for every bargain struck and every deal made.

Monster behavior

As a creature that thrives in financial transactions, the Ledgerfiend employs mind games, seeking to charm and manipulate its targets. It prefers to intimidate greedy merchants or curious adventurers into doing its bidding. It often uses its control powers to turn foes against one another, augmenting its own influence in the matter and generating chaos in situations where orderly transactions are expected.

Ecology

Ledgerfiends are known to exist in realms where commerce thrives. They often gather along trade routes, phantom marketplaces, and ancient vaults where deals were made and later forgotten. They act almost like guardians of these sites but tend to overreach by exacting harsh penalties on those who dishonor agreements. They have been known to impact economies significantly, creating or destroying wealth based on their whims.

History

While Ledgerfiends have existed for centuries, their origins are often debated. Some claim they were once powerful earthly beings who were cursed for their greed, while others argue they arose from the collective consciousness of those who lost their fortunes. Tales abound of powerful trading houses that rose to power or fell into ruin under the influence of these enigmatic beings. Many merchants tell cautionary tales heralding the Ledgerfiend’s retribution upon those who dare to defraud or misrepresent their transactions. In the Price Engine Chamber, adventurers sometimes meet these beings amid forgotten ledgers and the remnants of failed negotiations.
