Appearance & presence

Monster Description

The Soul Engine Guardian towers twelve feet tall, a nightmarish fusion of black iron and anguished spirits. Its body is a skeletal frame of rusted plates, riveted together with chains that writhe like serpents. Each link shimmers with a sickly blue light as trapped souls pulse within, their translucent faces pressing against the metal from inside. Its arms end in hook-like claws of jagged iron, dripping with a viscous, shadowy ichor.

From its torso, dozens of chains trail like entrails, dragging along the ground and scraping against stone with a sound like grinding bones. The guardian’s hollow eye sockets burn with twin pinpoints of cold, necrotic blue flame, leaving a faint afterimage in the air as it moves. It glides with an unnatural, heavy gait; each step shakes the floor, but it moves in eerie silence, broken only by the whisper of chains and the faint, distant wailing of the souls trapped within.

When it attacks, the light in its core flares, and the air around it grows deathly cold, causing torches to dim and frost to creep along nearby surfaces. The scent of ozone and decay lingers in its wake, and the faint cries of tormented spirits echo in the minds of those who draw near.

Instincts & motives

Monster behavior

The Soul Engine Guardian is singular in purpose: to guard the Emperor’s Vault at any cost. It shows no curiosity, no malice—only an implacable, mechanical drive to destroy intruders. It ignores all dialogue and pleas, responding only to violence or attempts to breach the vault. It patrols a fixed route within the vault’s inner sanctum, stopping only to ensure the seals on the entrance remain intact. When intruders enter, it prioritizes grappled targets, dragging them toward its core to feed their souls.

It is methodical, using its chains to control the battlefield and its aura to weaken foes before closing for melee. If its primary target escapes, it shifts focus to the nearest threat, demonstrating cold logic rather than rage. The guardian is relentless; it does not retreat or negotiate, even when severely damaged. Should its core be exposed, it unleashes a Wail of the Damned, an explosion of spectral energy that terrifies all nearby, before redoubling its assault. It does not pursue beyond the vault’s threshold, but it will fight to the last link of chain to protect its domain.

Habitat & life cycle

Ecology

The Soul Engine Guardian does not draw sustenance from natural means; it is powered entirely by the souls trapped in its core. These souls are siphoned from creatures that die within its aura, their essence slowly consumed to fuel its movements and attacks. Over centuries, each guardian has accumulated hundreds of souls, giving it terrible necrotic power. It has no biological life cycle; it was constructed, not born, and cannot reproduce or repair itself except through magical means.

It is typically found in ancient vaults, tombs, or strongholds where it was placed by its creators. It has no relationships with other creatures; it is an artifact of war and guardianship, indifferent to all life. Its only interaction with the outside world is when it drains souls or is attacked. Over time, the souls within its core slowly fade, weakening the construct. In some cases, spellcasters can feed it fresh souls to restore its power, making it a feared tool for those who understand its workings. Its existence is tied to its core, a glowing gem that can be shattered to free the trapped souls and destroy the guardian.

Origins & legends

History

Forged during the height of the Avernus Empire by a foul order of soul-binders, the Soul Engine Guardian was created to protect the Emperor’s Vault, a treasure hoard hidden for centuries. The binders used a ritual that trapped a hundred mortal souls into a single core, fusing them with black iron in a crucible of eternal flames. Each soul was a sacrifice—criminals, heretics, and captured enemies, their consciousness crushed into servitude.

The first guardian served the Emperor for three hundred years, its existence whispered in tales as the ‘Chain’s Redeemer.’ Over time, the vault was sealed, and its location lost to history. In the campaign ‘Ashes of the Banished: The Avernus Return,’ adventurers uncover the vault’s entrance beneath the ruins of the Imperial Palace, but they are not alone. A cult of soul-reavers has discovered the site, seeking to steal the guardian’s core to fuel their dark rituals.

The guardians have now been dormant for millennia, but the vibrations of tomb robbers have awakened this one, its ancient programming surging to life. This particular guardian was once the personal protector of Emperor Vorell III, and it remembers his death at the hands of traitors, adding a ghostly fury to its attacks. Adventurers who know its history can trace the scars on its armor to that assassination attempt, and may use that knowledge to distract it.
