Appearance & presence
The Ash Zealot is a gaunt, hollow-eyed human wrapped in sackcloth robes stained the color of old cinders. Coarse ash leathers its hair and skin, leaving pale tracks from sweat and greed across its cheeks. A necklace of stained and blackened phalanges, each stripped of sinew, clacks against its chest with every step. One hand carries a curved sickle-sword whose bronze has turned dark from ritual smoke, while the other clutches a clay flask shaped like a skull, stoppered with wax and tied to its wrist by a leather cord, the flask’s surface clinks unsettlingly as the zealot moves.
The creature’s breathing is shallow, ragged, and rhythmic—like a litany recited through clenched lungs. When it speaks, the voice is a husky whisper that always lands an octave too deep, and it seems to address its patron in mangled Ecclesiastic. But combat, many zealots do not speak at all; they chant the war-memory. When they exhale, a burst of gray ash stirs from their lips, leaving a powdery veil that softens the world briefly around them, and step takes a lifetime.
The pitch-black almond of the eye has burned out, replaced by an eerie orange-pink spore. They radiate a smell of burned oil and desert herbs, heavy and sweet near the fire-flask. Their movements are jerky by shifting places with feverish energy, perfectly capable of sudden bursts of speed, and they never flinch from fire. The Zealot is coal black against the charred grove, unmistakable even in gray light.
Instincts & motives
Ash Zealots are obedient with a single mind: to burn the living wood of the Verdant Vale and raise the Ash Orchard in its place. They rarely speak, save rare Zeal no liturgy or a thrilled, corrupted prayer to the Drowned Pyre. Heavily insular, they sleep in communal pits filled with warm banked coals, dream of the heart of dust, and wake by licking the ash from their teeth. In battle, they are disciplined—a bond thrown by the higher cult bells they shuffle into a working swarm, closing with their cast-iron sickles, then ordain fire flasks to break a line.
They respect the ember-head, a red-hot brand they call the Chain of Remembrance, and will be obliged by his command. They are a mix of raiders and sword-plots tasked with making that shift; one in twenty carries a cyanide dagger. If routers within the Veil have signed a false retreat of a senior homework, the Ash Zealot moves to the final stand. Yet for all of guilt they will obey an idol of their own.
If the higher ranking flame-theurge withdraws from the line, zealots will break and run, battered and reverting from their vows of sand—crying, shouting boasts of the Worthless Sun that they cannot mutter in reach and shelter.
Habitat & life cycle
Ash fever rise from the wrack of immense ash tree groves, where the natural heal of the flame has been corrupted by their lies. They feed on blackened grains, smoked roots, and the leftover fat of their prey, though fire is their true fuel: proximity to pulsing embers refills their blink. Their heart-pits sleep in reeking circles, hot to the touch, and dry as storms. They exude a waxy resin in a count of ward and consume old bones burned to dust.
A process that may be a form of mitigation of the creep. Despite the fanatical prose, they are mortal humans: they bleed, age, sleep, and die. A torch-time long over razing wood splinters their hand and festers in the wound best, overtaking hope, but within their cult mutation is abhorrent. They do not reproduce; they recruit the broken, the bitter, and arrive from villagers, no matter how twisted the path to ash.
Origins & legends
The cult arose from a famine cult 40 years ago among the ash-fishers who mined the ember-slums of the Vale's northern dune fringe. A woman named Vessaria, a refugee-priest of a ruined pyre, sought them and said the ash tells the truth: the elders soil must burn, lest the pit devour the wood. Many believed; they followed her to the edge of the spread of ash. Cannibalism of the led liturgy was gone, then began the slash and ash chore.
Wrapped in cocoons and ash-fire rites, they believed that by erasing the Vale's groves they could feed their refugee sight of the coming fire. The Vale's defenders dismiss them as desperate, but the Ash Zealot is branded into your mind: volunteer praises of Vessaria, each brand cold, and the burning of each grove is a syllable of her gospel. Their incursions spread—the Midnight Watcher, The Dryfall ambush, the Dawn Vigil—until they found the Gun Lamp's Claw and began to scar the root. They are packed, but each zealot dreams of one final surge, those who woman to remain free in the Vale's dead shadow.
