Traits and Actions

Memory Drain

Trait
Intelligence Saving Throw Rule
When the Pale Oarsman hits a creature with its Touch of Lethe, the target must succeed on a DC 18 Intelligence saving throw or lose 1d6 random memories (determined by the DM). These memories are stored in the Oarsman's memory pool. While the Oarsman has memories in its pool, it gains a +1 bonus to AC and its melee attacks deal an extra 1d6 necrotic damage per memory (maximum +5). A creature can restore lost memories by touching the Oarsman and succeeding on a DC 18 Charisma saving throw, but this provokes an opportunity attack.

Charm of the River

Trait
Charmed Custom
When a creature that can see the Pale Oarsman's blank face starts its turn within 30 feet of it, the creature must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed for 1 minute. While charmed, the creature is incapacitated and moves toward the Oarsman, using its movement to board the ferry. A charmed creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If the Oarsman attacks a charmed creature, the charm ends for that creature.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day)

Trait
If the Pale Oarsman fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Rejuvenation

Trait
When the Pale Oarsman is reduced to 0 hit points, it dissolves into a puddle of Styx water. It reforms at the River Styx within 1d10 days, fully restored. It can only be permanently destroyed if the Lost Names it has collected are returned to their owners.

Touch of Lethe

Action
Necrotic Damage Custom
Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 4) necrotic damage plus 9 (2d8) psychic damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 18 Intelligence saving throw or have its memories drained (see Memory Drain trait).

Oar of the Styx

Action
Stunned Custom
Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 4) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn.

Styx Water Burst

Action
Poisoned Custom
The Pale Oarsman releases a burst of Styx water in a 15-foot radius centered on itself. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or take 27 (6d8) necrotic damage and be poisoned for 1 minute. A poisoned creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Styx Shield

Reaction
When the Pale Oarsman is hit by an attack, it can summon a shield of Styx water, granting itself a +5 bonus to its AC against that attack. If the attack still hits, the attacker takes 10 (3d6) necrotic damage.

Running the encounter

Combat Behavior

Tactics

  • The Pale Oarsman uses its Oar of the Styx to keep enemies at bay, while its Charm of the River forces them to come closer.
  • It prioritizes targets that appear to be spellcasters, using Memory Drain to strip them of their spells.
  • When reduced to half its hit points, it uses Styx Water Burst to create distance and then repositions to the water.

Combat Style

It prefers to fight on the water, using its swim speed and the ferry for cover. It uses the environment to its advantage, forcing enemies into the Styx.

Morale

The Pale Oarsman is fearless. It fights until destroyed, knowing it will reform at the Styx.

Appearance & presence

Monster Description

The Pale Oarsman appears as a gaunt, skeletal figure draped in tattered black robes that hang sodden over its frame. Its exposed bones are unnaturally white, as if bleached by ages of Styx water. The creature's face is a featureless void—a smooth expanse of pale flesh resembling stretched parchment, utterly devoid of eyes, nose, or mouth. This blankness seems to absorb light, drawing the gaze irresistibly while offering nothing in return.

A jagged, ragged cloak of shadow trails behind it, weeping droplets of black, oily water that hiss and sizzle where they fall. In its hands, it clutches a long, gnarled oar of dark wood, dripping with viscous Styx ichor. The creature's movements are slow and deliberate, gliding rather than stepping, and its joints creak and groan with a sickeningly rhythmic sound. The air around it grows heavy with the scent of damp rot, cold river water, and ozone-like bitterness.

When it moves, a low, mournful hum emanates from its hollow chest, a sound that seems to reverberate in the skull of those who hear it. The water around it ripples with faint, ghostly faces that surface and sink without sound, their silent screams echoing in the mind's eye. The Oarsman's touch is cold, draining warmth and hope, and the Styx water that clings to its form solidifies into a defensive shroud when threatened. Its presence is an oppressive weight, a silent accusation that inescapably reminds observers of their own transience and forgotten sins.

Instincts & motives

Monster behavior

The Pale Oarsman is a relentless ferryman bound to its duty, yet it exhibits a quiet malevolence. It does not speak, but it communicates through gestures and the stolen memories it holds. It is patient and methodical, waiting for souls or intruders to approach its ferry, and it does not taunt or gloat—it simply performs its task with cold efficiency. When confronted, it prefers to ensnare its foes through its hypnotic gaze and memory-draining touch, aiming to incapacitate and then force them aboard its vessel.

It targets spellcasters first, as their minds hold vast reservoirs of lore and power to consume. If outnumbered, it uses the Styx to its advantage, retreating to open water where it maneuvers the ferry and its oar with deadly skill. The Oarsman does not bargain, but it might pause to observe a creature who offers something valuable, such as a lost memory or a secret, before deciding their fate. It shows no fear of death, knowing it will reform at the River Styx, and it fights until destroyed, only to return to its eternal duty. Those who resist its charm and survive its trials may find it ignores them rather than wasting its energy, especially if they flee toward the river's banks.

Habitat & life cycle

Ecology

The Pale Oarsman is a unique undead entity that exists solely to ferry the souls and self-proclaimed travelers across the River Styx in Avernus. It does not hunt for sustenance but rather feeds on memories, which it devours and hoards to sustain its existence. It dwells in a semi-substantial hut on the riverbank, where it maintains a rotting, oar-driven ferryboat. It has no allies, but it holds a grudging respect for other ferrymen and river spirits, which it often ignores.

The creature's life cycle is a paradox: it is bound to the Styx, and when destroyed, it dissolves into the water and reforms within days. It does not reproduce but is sustained by the memories it collects, which reinforce its connection to the river. The Oarsman's presence poisons the surrounding waters, and fish and lesser creatures shun the areas where it travels. Its lair is a place of eerie calm, littered with forgotten trinkets and debris swept by the current.

Origins & legends

History

The Pale Oarsman was once a mortal ferryman who served the River Styx for countless centuries, ferrying souls and devils across its black waters. Over time, the river consumed him, leaving only a hollow, undead shell. Its memory was erased, and it now collects the memories of others in a desperate attempt to fill the void within itself. It is said that the Oarsman was once a soul who refused to leave the Styx, choosing to become its guardian after a tragedy lost to time.

It has appeared in various infernal texts, always as a harbinger of forgotten fates. In the campaign module, adventurers first encounter its ferry at a crossing near the ruins of a forgotten temple. Locals whisper that the Oarsman can be bargained with, but only with memories of profound personal loss. A hero who discovers the original name of the ferryman might be able to command it, but such knowledge has been long lost. Its presence is a fixture of Avernus, and devils and planar travelers alike will warn against crossing the Styx without an escort, for the Oarsman always collects its due.
