Traits and Actions

Bound in Chains

Trait
The Ledgerfiend is bound by magical chains that extend from its body. Melee attacks made using these chains can reach 10 feet away. It can make special attacks involving these chains under certain conditions.

Clauses of Damnation

Trait Custom
Charisma Saving Throw Rule
The Ledgerfiend's power is derived from contracts and bargains. When it deals damage with a melee attack, it may impose a condition of your choice to a creature whose owner possesses a physical item of value or has an active debt. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Charisma saving throw or become frightened until the end of its next turn. If the creature is already frightened, it instead becomes paralyzed until the end of its next turn.

Multiattack

Trait
The Ledgerfiend makes three attacks with its Chains of Binding and can use its Clauses of Damnation feature for one of its attacks.

Chains of Binding

Action
Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) slashing damage. If the target is a creature, it is grappled (escape DC 15). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the Ledgerfiend cannot use this chain attack on another target. The Ledgerfiend can use its action to try to damage the restrained target, creating an opening for its allies.

Teleporting Grasp (Recharge 5-6)

Action
As a bonus action, the Ledgerfiend can teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space it can see. Additionally, it can attempt to pull a grappled target with it in a 10-foot radius, moving the target to its location. If the target is carrying valuable items, it takes an additional 10 (3d6) necrotic damage upon being pulled. This bonus action disrupts existing income clauses of the Ledgerfiend.

Combat Behavior

Tactics

• Use Chains of Binding to grapple the strongest foes.
• Utilize Teleporting Grasp to reposition or isolate targets.
• Employ Clauses of Damnation to create fear and control in the battlefield.

Morale

The Ledgerfiend fights to the death, believing it can reclaim lost contracts even in defeat.

Monster Description

The Ledgerfiend is a unique and insidious demon bound by chains forged from broken contracts. It thrives in the realms of debt and promises, manifesting with a terrifying physical presence that embodies the regret and anger of those who have been deceived. In its home beneath the earth, the Ledgerfiend operates as an arbiter of binding contracts, often detaining souls to collect on debts in a cruel parody of justice. Its chains, extensions of its will, have the power to restrain those who owe a price to society—and those who dare to cross its paths often find themselves ensnared in endless struggles, grappling with their culpability as they face its malevolence.

Monster behavior

In combat, the Ledgerfiend employs its formidable reach to grapple enemies and isolate its targets. Its primary strategy involves restraining the most troublesome foes with its Chains of Binding while systematically taking down support allies, often employing its teleportation ability to move strategically around the battlefield. It seeks to control the flow of combat by dividing its opponents and capitalizing on weaknesses derived from valuable items or existing debts. Its ability to paralyze frightens adversaries, invoking panic among those who know their debts well. Even those who try to flee may find themselves ensnared.

Ecology

The Ledgerfiend has no natural habitat, rooted instead in the filaments of broken deals and bad debts. It feeds off the despair of those unfortunate enough to encounter it, and the more broken promises it witnesses, the stronger it becomes. Shunned wherever it goes, it seeks out the lonely and desperate, sometimes collaborating with those who would bargain with the fiend to gain fortunes or power at the expense of others.

History

The Ledgerfiend emerged from the convergence of multiple contracts, a once-venerable entity twisted by betrayal and greed into a fiend of chain and coercion. Legends say that myriad souls have been lost to its dark machinations, binding themselves in oaths that would ultimately result in ruin. Many sights of the Ledgerfiend are associated with ancient ruins where deals were struck and lore was lost. Those foolish enough to attempt reckoning or negotiation with it often find themselves subject to the Ledgerfiend's cruel whims, etched deeply into its chains.
