Tactics
• The stalker uses its Shadow Stealth to hide and then attacks with surprise, using its Ambusher trait to gain advantage. • It uses Shadow Step to reposition and avoid melee, and to close distance on ranged attackers. • It focuses its attacks on the most isolated or weakest-looking target, using its tentacle to poison and weaken it. • If outmatched, it uses its Uncanny Dodge to reduce damage and retreats into the shadows.
Morale
The stalker is a coward at heart. If reduced to half its hit points, it will attempt to flee using its Shadow Step and Stealth.
Monster Description
A Gloomveil Stalker is a gaunt, shadowy aberration that hunts in the dark places of the world. Its body is covered in slick, dark chitin, and its face is a mass of writhing tentacles. It is a patient and cunning predator, using stealth and surprise to isolate and kill its prey.
Monster behavior
Gloomveil Stalkers are solitary hunters. They prefer to ambush lone creatures, using their Shadow Step to close distance and their tentacles to poison and weaken victims. They are fiercely territorial and will stalk intruders for days before striking.
Ecology
These aberrations are found in deep caves, ruined cities, and other places where darkness reigns. They feed on the life force of their victims, leaving behind drained and withered corpses. They are sometimes worshipped by cults that revere darkness and entropy.
History
Legends say that Gloomveil Stalkers were once creatures of the Feywild that were corrupted by the Shadowfell. They are ancient beings, and some sages believe they are the remnants of a failed experiment by a mad wizard to create the perfect assassin.
