Behind the character

Character Information

Malrec Thorn is a gaunt wood elf ranger whose ash-grey skin and fire-scarred longbow mark him as a survivor of the worst the orc war did to the Thornwood. Once the Concord's finest tracker, he is now its most dangerous rogue commander: quiet, intense, and unfailingly courteous until the moment violence begins. He speaks softly, offers water to travelers he may kill within the hour, and grieves for every burned acre of his home forest โ€” and he has concluded, with terrible clarity, that the only forest that will ever be safe is one with no humans in it.

He respects courage even in enemies, despises liars above all creatures, and keeps his word with a literalism that has unsettled more than one negotiator. His rangers follow him out of grief as much as loyalty; his niece Nyx loves and doubts him in equal measure; and the Ashen Choir believes him a weapon they control, not knowing that grief has made him more dangerous to betray than to use.

Beneath the extremist is a man who still skims Choir coin to pay human families his raids displaced, still searches prisoner ledgers for a brother who may live, and still kneels each year at the ash ring where his family died. Whether Malrec ends as the fire that burns the borderlands or the reluctant ally who helps expose the Chancellor depends entirely on whether anyone can reach the man beneath the grudge before the Forest Heart ritual begins.

Before the adventure

Character Background

Malrec was born in the Silvergrove, a Thornwood clan settlement of wood elves who had lived in the deep forest for nine generations. He was trained from youth as a scout and tracker, pairing with Lia Woodswhisper under the Concord's old scoutmaster, and the two became legendary for reading the forest's silences and movements in concert. When the orc hordes poured from the Spine of the World, the Thornwood opened its trails to Accord patrols, and Malrec guided human, dwarven, and elven soldiers alike through the deep woods.

He believed, then, in the alliance. In the second year of the war, a human column โ€” whether misled, ordered, or simply careless โ€” fired the Silvergrove. Malrec's parents died in the smoke; his younger brother vanished, last recorded in a Crown prisoner ledger; and Malrec carried his eight-year-old niece Nyx out of the burning trees on his back. The war ended. The orcs were broken. And the humans who burned his home were never named, never tried, never punished.

Malrec petitioned the Concord elders for justice and received procedure. He petitioned the Accord Remnant and received sympathy without action. So he built his own answer: a war-band of grieving young scouts, a network of hidden groves and blind ambush sites, and a doctrine as simple as it was monstrous โ€” the only safe forest is one with no humans in it. His raids escalated from defense to punishment: border farms, patrol posts, and finally the human village of Burning Ford.

The Concord censured him and stripped his sanction, but half the young rangers followed him anyway, and the elders, watching the Crown's crimes go unanswered, dared not push harder. Then the Ashen Choir found him. They offered what he had begged the institutions for: a name, a plan, and a promised reckoning. Their human contact โ€” a man he knows only as 'the Chancellor's shadow' โ€” fed him coded hymns, forged Accord orders, and Crown silver, and promised him the Thornwood's borders drawn in ash.

Malrec took the coin, distributed the forged documents that turned human and elf patrols against each other, and staged the ambush at Thornwood Edge. He tells himself he is using the Choir as much as they use him. He is beginning to suspect otherwise: the corruption beneath the Forest Heart is spreading through the artifact they gave him, his venom grove is dying, and the Choir's letters have grown cold.

He has begun preparing for betrayal, even as he prepares the ritual that will burn three human border villages and shatter the peace forever. Around him, the pieces of his undoing gather: his niece copies his letters into a Concord dead-drop; his old partner Lia builds the case that could destroy him; a druid named Theris waits at the Forest Heart stone; and somewhere in the human world, a brother may still be alive, in a ledger no one has thought to read.

Malrec Thorn is a tragedy in motion โ€” a good ranger who learned that grief without justice becomes fire, and who now must decide, in a single moment with his niece's arrow drawn on him, whether the forest he loves is worth more than the vengeance that has kept him alive.

Threads to follow

Unresolved Plots

  • The melted signet ring from the Silvergrove ashes has never been identified. Whoever it belonged to gave the burn order, and the ring's crest could either damn Chancellor Vaelor or exonerate him โ€” Malrec does not yet know which, and neither does the party.
  • Malrec's human contact, 'the Chancellor's shadow,' has gone silent for three months. Either the contact is dead, or the Choir is cutting Malrec loose now that his ritual is no longer needed. Malrec suspects the latter and is beginning to prepare for betrayal.
  • Nyx has quietly copied two of Malrec's Choir letters and hidden them in a Concord dead-drop. If discovered by the elders, Malrec is finished; if discovered by the Choir, Nyx is. Malrec does not know the copies exist.
  • The blight beneath the Forest Heart is spreading faster than the Choir predicted, and Malrec's venom grove is dying. The corruption is not the Choir's design โ€” something older under the breeding pits is feeding through the artifact twins, and Malrec is beginning to hear it in his dreams.
  • A human soldier from the Silvergrove burning survived and has been sending Malrec anonymous letters of confession and coin for years โ€” this is the source of his Ash-Voice hymn fragments. The letters stopped last month. Malrec does not know if the man is dead, discovered, or lying in wait.

Beneath the surface

Secrets

  • Malrec knows the Thornwood Edge ambush that killed human patrols was staged on Choir orders, with forged Accord documents he personally helped distribute. If this surfaced, the Concord would execute him and the elves would lose all moral standing in the peace talks โ€” which is precisely why the Choir wanted him to do it.
  • Malrec's family did not all die in the Silvergrove fire. His younger brother survived, was taken captive by Crown soldiers, and was last recorded in a human prisoner ledger. Malrec has secretly spent years searching prisoner manifests for the name, and the possibility his brother lives is the one hope he has never spoken aloud.
  • Malrec has been skimming from the Choir's payments โ€” not for himself, but to fund quiet reparations to human families displaced by his own raids at Burning Ford. He tells no one, because the contradiction would destroy him with both the elves and the Choir.

What haunts them

Fears

  • That his brother is alive, a prisoner or a collaborator, and that Malrec's burning of human settlements has made his brother's rescue or survival impossible.
  • That Lia Woodswhisper is right โ€” that his rage has made him the very thing he hates, a burner of homes, and that the forest itself will one day reject him as it rejects blight.
  • That Nyx will die for his cause, and that the last of his family's blood will end not in a grove but on a human road, because he taught her to hate before he taught her to endure.

What drives them

Aspirations

  • To see the Silvergrove replanted โ€” not symbolically, but acre by acre, with his own hands, on land the Crown has formally surrendered to the Concord.
  • To drag the man who gave the burn order before the Concord elders in chains and make him confess before every clan, so that no elf ever again has to choose between vengeance and honor.
  • To bring his brother home to the Thornwood, alive, and to teach him the trails their parents walked โ€” the future he has never admitted wanting because wanting it would mean believing the war could end.

Personal quest ยท 1

The Name in the Smoke

Malrec's family died in the burning of the Silvergrove, but he has never learned which human officer gave the order. A dying Concord scout whispered that the commanding officer's seal was pressed into a melted signet ring recovered from the grove's ashes and hidden in a ruined Accord patrol post. Malrec must infiltrate the post, recover the ring, and trace the crest to its owner โ€” and then decide whether that man is still alive, and what Malrec will do if he is.

Current Stage

Infiltrate the ruined patrol post in the Sundered Marches and recover the melted signet ring from the collapsed officers' quarters.

Mechanical Rewards
  • Malrec learns the identity of the man who burned Silvergrove, granting advantage on all Deception and Insight checks against that individual and their agents.
  • Unlocks the 'Grudge-Honed' trait: once per day, against the identified officer or their direct subordinates, Malrec's first poisoned arrow ignores resistance to poison damage.
Narrative Rewards
  • If the officer is Vaelor, Malrec gains hard evidence connecting the Crown to the grove burnings โ€” evidence he can trade with the party or hoard for his ritual.
  • If Malrec chooses mercy upon finding the officer dead or innocent, the Thornwood Concord's elders begin to see him as a leader rather than an extremist.

Personal quest ยท 2

The Hollow Tree Cache

Theron Outcast, Malrec's own cousin, has fled the Concord and hidden proof of Malrec's dealings with the Ashen Choir in a hollow tree guarded by loyalists. Malrec knows the cache exists and knows Theron knows too much. He must decide whether to destroy the journal, silence Theron, or โ€” if his conscience stirs โ€” let the evidence surface and face his clan's judgment. This quest runs in parallel with the party's own 'Deserter's Proof' side quest, making Malrec and the party direct rivals.

Current Stage

Learn that Theron has fled and taken knowledge of the journal's location.

Mechanical Rewards
  • If Malrec destroys the journal, he gains the Choir's full trust and a second dose of refined serpent venom (his Venomcrafter poison DC increases to 15).
  • If he surrenders the journal, he loses the Choir's protection but gains the Concord's formal pardon and Nyx's unwavering loyalty, granting him a once-per-battle command ability over Concord rangers.
Narrative Rewards
  • The journal's fate determines whether Theron lives to testify and whether the Concord learns of Malrec's Choir correspondence before the Forest Heart ritual.

Personal quest ยท 3

The Serpent's Ledger

Malrec's venomcraft depends on a Thornwood fungi grove deep beneath the Forest Heart โ€” a grove now infested with blight-stalkers grown from the corruption the Choir's artifact seeded there. If the grove dies, Malrec loses his signature weapon and his rangers lose their edge. He must clear the blight without burning the grove, which means working with druid Theris Mossbeard โ€” a man who despises what Malrec has become โ€” or accepting the Choir's offer of alchemical substitutes that come with strings attached.

Current Stage

Descend into the blighted fungal groves beneath the Forest Heart and map the infestation.

Mechanical Rewards
  • If cleansed by druidic means, Malrec's Venomcrafter poison gains a secondary effect: on a failed save, the target's speed is also halved until the end of its next turn.
  • If he accepts the Choir's tincture, his poison damage increases to 3d4 but he permanently loses one spell slot of each level as the tincture saps his connection to the forest's natural magic.
Narrative Rewards
  • Working with Theris opens the first genuine dialogue between Malrec and the Concord's old guard, seeding his potential redemption arc.
  • Accepting the Choir's gift marks Malrec physically โ€” ash-grey streaks in his braids that Nyx and other elves will notice.

Major Decision

Context

After the Thornwood Edge ambush, Malrec captures a wounded human survivor โ€” a Crown courier carrying the forged orders that started the border incidents. The courier begs for his life and offers to testify that a man with a Crown seal paid him to plant the documents.

Choice Made
Malrec can execute the courier as an enemy of the forest, release him with a warning to carry fear back to the Crown, or spare him and extract the testimony โ€” the same evidence the party will later hunt.
Impact

Executing the courier hardens Malrec's rangers and grants him a permanent +1 to damage rolls against humans (his fury becomes legend among his band), but destroys evidence the Concord needs and pushes the Concord toward war. Sparing him costs Malrec face among his extremists (lose 1 hit point maximum permanently as his followers' faith wavers) but preserves the testimony that could exonerate the elves and implicate Vaelor โ€” the seed of Malrec's possible redemption.

Major Decision

Context

The Ashen Choir offers Malrec a corrupted artifact โ€” the twin of the one beneath the breeding pits โ€” to power his ritual at the Forest Heart. Taking it means the ritual will burn the human borderlands as promised; refusing means the Choir withdraws its rangers, coin, and protection, leaving Malrec's band exposed to Crown retaliation.

Choice Made
Accept the artifact and bind his fate to the Choir, refuse and stand alone, or accept it in secret while planning to use the Forest Heart stone to cleanse rather than burn.
Impact

Accepting grants Malrec the 'Ash-Touched' ability: once per day he can release a 30-foot-radius pulse of corrupting heat (DC 15 Constitution save, 3d6 fire damage, flammable vegetation ignites), but he gains vulnerability to radiant damage and Nyx's loyalty becomes fragile. Refusing keeps his soul his own but strips his band to a skeleton force โ€” all his ranger allies in the final battle are reduced by half. The secret-third path is the only route to the true redemption ending.

Major Decision

Context

At the Forest Heart, Nyx Thorn โ€” Malrec's niece โ€” has an arrow drawn on him. She has seen the Choir's letters. Whatever Malrec says in the next thirty seconds decides whether she shoots, joins him, or lowers her bow.

Choice Made
Malrec can lie to her one final time, tell her the full truth and beg her to finish what the humans started, or confess everything and ask her to help him stop the ritual instead.
Impact

Lying grants him one last surge of certainty โ€” advantage on all attack rolls for the first three rounds of the final battle, but Nyx fights against him and the Concord is permanently hostile. Confessing costs him the ritual (the campaign's border-burning ending is averted) and permanently transforms him: he loses the Ash-Voice trait but gains the Heartwood Seed's blessing, regaining 8 hit points maximum and becoming a potential reluctant ally who can testify against Vaelor.

Shared History

Nyx was eight years old when the Silvergrove burned, and it was Malrec who carried her out of the smoke on his back, her hair singed and her parents already dead. He raised her afterward in the hidden groves, teaching her the bow, the trails, and the grudges. For twenty years she has been his most devoted ranger, the only person he speaks to without armor in his voice. But Nyx has grown into something Malrec did not plan: a scout with her own eyes.

She has watched him take Choir coin, read fragments of his correspondence with 'the Chancellor's shadow,' and seen how his courtesy curdles into cruelty when humans are mentioned. She still loves him โ€” he is the only family she has left โ€” but love and doubt now live in her together. At the Forest Heart she will stand with an arrow nocked and her hands shaking, because Malrec taught her that a ranger's first duty is to the forest, and she has begun to believe the forest does not want his fire.

Potential Breaking Points

  • If shown proof of Malrec's Choir letters
  • If Malrec lies to her at the ritual

Enemy

Lia Woodswhisper

Threat Level 4/10
Conflict Type ideological and personal

Personal Stakes

Lia and Malrec trained together under the same Concord scoutmaster before the war, and for a season they were the Concord's finest tracking pair โ€” he read the forest's silences, she read its movement, and between them nothing crossed the Thornwood unseen. When the Silvergrove burned, Lia mourned with him; she buried his family beside him and held his hands in the ash. But where Malrec concluded that humans are a sickness, Lia concluded that the Crown's officers are โ€” and she has spent the years since building a case she can prove rather than a fire she can set.

She was the one who argued before the Concord elders to censure Malrec for the Burning Ford raid, and her testimony nearly cost him his band. He has never forgiven her for choosing procedure over vengeance; she has never forgiven him for making her choose. Now they hunt the same conspiracy from opposite ends: she gathers evidence to save the peace, he gathers evidence to justify the war, and each knows the other's methods better than anyone alive.

If Malrec falls at the Forest Heart, it will likely be Lia who decides what is done with him โ€” and she has sworn that if he burns the borderlands, she will put him down herself, as she would any beast turned rabid by grief.

Possible Resolutions

  • Defeat in ideological debate before the Concord elders
  • Joint exposure of Vaelor forcing uneasy reconciliation

Faction

The Thornwood Concord

Standing 3/10

Influence

Malrec was born into the Concord's third clan and bled for it through the entire orc war, scouting human lines and carrying wounded elves through the burning Marches. After the Silvergrove burned, the elders granted him a war-band to defend the deep forest, and for a time he was their sharpest blade. But his raids grew beyond defense โ€” Burning Ford, the border farms, the ambush at Thornwood Edge โ€” and the Concord formally censured him, stripping his band of official sanction.

He kept his rangers anyway; half the young scouts follow him out of grief and fury, and the elders dare not push too hard while the Crown's crimes go unpunished. Malrec still speaks the Concord's oaths and still knows every hidden grove, but he now acts as a rogue commander whose ambitions exceed his mandate. The Concord's druids, led by Theris Mossbeard, watch him with growing dread, knowing his Forest Heart ritual would corrupt the very thing he claims to protect.

His standing within the faction is the campaign's fulcrum: if the party exposes his Choir dealings to the elders, the Concord turns on him; if the party instead proves the Crown burned the groves, the Concord may rally behind him โ€” and the war becomes inevitable.

Obligations

  • Protection of the deep forest groves
  • Vendetta against the Silvergrove's burners

Benefits

  • Hidden groves and escape trails
  • Ranger war-band loyalty (contested)
