Elara Voss was born in Starfall, the daughter of a ship's navigator and a Grand Library archivist, into a family that had quietly kept Cartographer traditions alive for six generations without fully understanding them. Her grandmother taught her the old constellations before she could read, and by ten she was correcting the orrery in Observatory Plaza. At sixteen, she found her great-great-grandmother Lyra Voss's sealed letters in a family strongbox—letters describing the Astral Cartographers' fall, the forging of the Horizon Needle, and a student named Veyron who asked forbidden questions.
Those letters defined her life. She trained formally as a wizard at Starfall's scholarly circles, specializing in Divination because the Cartographers' greatest sin was ignorance of what lay beyond their maps, and she swore never to be ignorant again. Her thirties were spent in the field: expeditions to dormant Cartographer beacons, surveys of planar rifts, and one catastrophic mistake—a solo Astral Gate ritual she performed with an incomplete relic, during which something on the far side spoke her name.
She came back with her gift partially burned and a warding scheme for Starfall built from the wreckage of her own foresight. Her forties brought respectability: a position at the Grand Library, a reputation for planar expertise, and an apprentice, Lian, whom she loves as a son. Then, two years ago, her Portent dice began showing a black hole with a citadel orbiting it, and she knew the letters' prophecy had come due.
She located the Horizon Needle in the Observatory of Falling Stars using her Cartographer's Blood, learned that Veyron's cult had resurfaced, and began assembling the pieces of a counter-plan: recover the Needle, reach the Astral Compass, and close whatever gate Veyron opens—at any cost. She hired the party because divination showed her their faces, and because she is honest enough with herself to know she cannot do it alone. She hides three things: the voice that spoke her name, her intention to study the Needle herself, and the slow sacrifice of her divination gift to shield Starfall.
She is a patron, a scholar, a survivor, and—though she would never say it—a penance walking on two legs, trying to redeem a bloodline with a needle's point of light against an ocean of dark.
