Behind the character

Character Information

Kazzara Emberwing stands tall even among dragonborn, a broad-shouldered warrior whose burnished gold-bronze scales catch light like embers at dusk. Her molten amber eyes carry the weight of an old faith, and the short frilled crests sweeping back from her brow give her the look of a crowned queen—though she would laugh at the comparison. A pale scar crosses one snout ridge, a memento of the temple raid that scattered her congregation, and she wears it without shame.

She dresses in worn chain mail over a cream tabard embroidered with the sigil of her order: a coiled dragon encircling a crater. Her battered shield bears the same mark, and at her chest hangs a small crystal shard on a cord—the relic she was sworn to guard—faintly glowing when the moon is high.

In battle she is a wall of discipline. She plants herself between danger and the vulnerable, longsword in one hand, shield in the other, her breath weapon a roaring cone of golden fire inherited from her gold dragon ancestry. She favors the longsword's measured, disarming strikes over reckless fury, and she is quick to read a battlefield—her reflexes honed by years of temple bells and midnight drills. Off the field, she is warm but formal, prone to ritual gestures: touching her shard before meals, reciting the Litany of the Crater at dawn.

She is Lawful Good in the truest sense—her law is the old covenant between dragons and mortals, and her goodness is fierce, protective, and occasionally overbearing. She struggles with books and scholarly abstraction, trusting instead in scripture memorized by heart, muscle, and fire. Her voice can boom with Thaumaturgy when she needs it, and she uses that voice to comfort the frightened as often as to cow the wicked. She believes, quietly and absolutely, that Queen Mirisa watches from the Crater of Nadi—and that Kazzara has not yet earned the right to disappoint her.

Before the adventure

Character Background

Kazzara Emberwing was hatched in the twilight of Edina's oldest faith. Centuries after Queen Mirisa's sacrifice birthed the Crater of Nadi, small conclaves of dragonborn and mortal devotees kept the memory alive in remote shrines, tending relics said to be fragments of the Queen's final form. Kazzara's family served one such conclave—the Temple of the Ember Vigil, carved into a mountainside three days' walk from the nearest village. From her earliest memories, she remembers soot and candlelight, the low drone of the Litany of the Crater, and the warmth of the relic shard pressed into her palms by her grandmother, the temple's last high keeper: 'This is a piece of her promise. You are a piece of her people.'

She was raised as an acolyte first and a warrior second, though the two callings bled together. The temple's keepers taught that Queen Mirisa did not die to escape the world but to bind herself to it—that the Crater's glow was the Queen's heart still beating, and that every dragonborn descended from the old pantheon carried an obligation to nurture mortals as the dragons once did. Kazzara took these lessons literally.

When bandits raided the temple's stores, she stood in the doorway at fourteen years old with a ceremonial spear and did not move. When plague touched the nearby village, she carried water and burned the dead with her own breath, reciting the Litany over each pyre so their ash would rise toward the Crater.

The temple did not survive the age that followed. Raiders, cultists of Azerath's lingering memory, and simple neglect thinned the congregation until only Kazzara's grandmother and a handful of elders remained. On the night the temple finally fell, the high keeper pressed the relic shard into Kazzara's hands and sent her down the mountain with one command: 'Carry her promise where people still live. A shrine means nothing if no one stands at it.' Kazzara has never learned whether her grandmother survived the fire. She does not speak of that night, except to say the Litany once, softly, when asked.

Since then she has wandered the lowlands as a soldier of the old covenant. She served a season as a caravan guard, another as a militia spearwoman in a border town that could not pay her and paid her in respect instead. Everywhere she goes she plants small shrines—stones stacked in a ring, a candle, a recitation—and everywhere she goes she finds that mortals still hunger for the old promise.

She trains relentlessly in the fighter's disciplines: shield work, the disarming Sap technique her militia sergeant taught her, and the disciplined breathing that lets her call on her gold dragon breath twice before exhaustion takes hold. Her acolyte's training gave her small miracles—flames that flicker at her word, sacred light that sears the faithless, and once, on a fevered night, a healing touch she swears came as much from the shard as from her own faith.

She carries three things she will not sell or surrender: her shield with the sigil of the Crater, the relic shard, and a battered copy of the Litany transcribed in her own claw-marks. She seeks companions who fight for something beyond coin, and she measures every oath twice before swearing it—because she intends to keep every one. Her great fear is not death but irrelevance: that the Crater's light will fade, that the last keepers will die out, and that Queen Mirisa's sacrifice will be forgotten as myth.

Her great hope is simpler: to stand, one day, at the rim of the Crater of Nadi itself, and return the shard to its Queen—or to learn that the Queen's promise was never meant to be returned, only carried forward. Until then, Kazzara Emberwing walks, watches, and remembers, a golden ember of an old fire refusing to go out.
