Kaelric was hatched into the Wardenclutch, a small, austere enclave of white dragonborn dwelling in the high glacial fjords of the north, where the ice remembers things men have forgotten. The enclave's traditions were older than its temples: the Wardens were not priests of conquest but keepers—those who stood between the world and the things that stirred beneath the permafrost. Ancient fiends had fled north in ages past, seeking the deep cold to slumber in; old spirits clung to glacier-halls; and unquiet dead walked the white silence.
The Wardens' answer was never destruction, for destruction was rarely permanent. Their answer was the Frozen Seal: the forbidden art of binding defeated supernatural beings within enchanted sigils, holding them in stasis, questioning them, and containing them until the world found a better answer.
Kaelric was raised an Acolyte of this tradition, trained in Religion and calligraphy, for a seal is only as strong as the precision of its sigils and the truth of the words that empower them. He learned early that binding is not cruelty—his teachers insisted it was mercy and prudence in one act: the fiend is not slain and sent onward to whatever awaits, nor freed to ravage, but held, its harm suspended.
Yet he also learned the cost. His mentor, Warden Sserah, carried a seal upon her shield that whispered to her nightly, offering knowledge, then flattery, then threats. She held firm for thirty years. Kaelric watched her will erode and understood that a binder's greatest enemy is not the thing in the seal, but the slow erosion of his own certainty.
The enclave fell—or rather, broke open. A seal kept in the deep vaults, one bound generations ago and half-forgotten, weakened as its keeper's line thinned. What escaped was an ancient thing of hunger and cold wisdom, and in a single night of ice and screaming, the fjord-halls were lost. Kaelric survived because Sserah spent her final strength completing one last binding—sealing the escaped horror partially, imperfectly, into a sigil that now waits, whispering, for a binder strong enough to finish the work or wise enough to destroy it. She pressed her shield into his hands and named him Warden in her dying breath.
Now Kaelric walks the lowlands alone, a paladin without a temple, sworn to the Oath of the Frozen Chain: that the cold itself shall stand between the innocent and harm. He seeks knowledge in old contracts and older graves, hunts the escaped and the unbound, and negotiates where negotiation saves more than steel. He is Lawful Neutral in the strictest sense—a jailer, not a judge. He will bargain with a devil if the bargain can be sealed tighter than the devil can chew through, and he will show a subdued spirit more courtesy than most men show guests.
But every seal he inscribes is a promise, and he keeps his promises with the patience of a glacier and the finality of one. Somewhere behind him, in the sigil he carries, something ancient whispers. He has not yet answered it. He intends to be ready when he must.
