Features

Web of Whispers (Custom)

Umbral Court Spy Network Level 10
1/long rest

The Shroud maintains a network of spies across the Silvercourt Reach (including June the Apothecary's couriers). As an action, she can ask one question of any spy within 100 miles; the answer arrives as a whisper from the nearest reflective surface within 1 hour. She can also spend 10 minutes to plant one false rumor in her network, which spreads to the Lunar Concord within 24 hours.

Mirror Step (Custom)

Umbral Court Blessing Level 10
Bonus action, 3/day

While within 30 feet of any reflective surface (still water, polished stone, glass, a mirror), the Shroud can teleport to an unoccupied space adjacent to another reflective surface she can see within 30 feet. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks. If she ends the teleport in dim light or darkness, she is lightly obscured until she moves or attacks.

Illusory Self

School of Illusion Level 6
Reaction, 1/short rest

When a creature hits the Shroud with an attack roll, she can force that creature to make an Intelligence saving throw against her spell save DC (16). On a failure, the attack automatically misses because the Shroud was never truly there โ€” the attacker struck a reflection. She is then invisible to that creature until the end of its next turn.

The Mirror Sigil

Artifact (Rare Magic Item) Level 10
1/day

A polished silver mirror shard worn at her hip. She has advantage on saving throws against illusions, and can cast Mirror Image once per day without expending a spell slot. If the sigil is shattered (AC 15, 20 HP) while she carries it, she loses these benefits and becomes visibly distraught โ€” a key moment for the redemption path.

Veiled Mind (Custom)

Umbral Court Blessing Level 10

The Shroud is immune to the Charmed condition and has advantage on saving throws against any effect that would read her thoughts or detect her lies (including Zone of Truth, Detect Thoughts, and Insight checks opposed by her Deception). Her mask is more than cloth โ€” it is a ward.

Illusionist (Improved Illusions)

School of Illusion Level 6

When the Shroud casts an Illusion spell using a spell slot, she can also cast a cantrip of the school of Illusion as part of the same action. Additionally, when she casts Illusory Script or Silent Image, she can weave in subtle motion and sound without concentration.

Misty Visions

School of Illusion Level 10
At will

The Shroud can cast Silent Image at will without expending a spell slot or material components. She uses this constantly to layer her lair with false walls, false allies, and false exits.

Alert (Background Feat)

Criminal Level 1

The Shroud adds her proficiency bonus (+4) to Initiative rolls, and can swap Initiative with a willing ally (such as a Mirrorling) after rolling. She is almost never caught off guard.

Spellcasting

Intelligence DC 16 +8 to hit Level 1: 4 slots Level 2: 3 slots Level 3: 3 slots Level 4: 3 slots Level 5: 2 slots

The Shroud always opens combat with Mirror Image (or Mislead if she has a full round of warning), then retreats behind her Mirrorlings while maintaining concentration on a battlefield illusion. She counterspells any divination magic. If three or more of her illusions are disproven or dispelled in a single round, she uses Mirror Step or Misty Step to flee into the Reflection Cavern, leaving the Mirror Sigil's echo behind as a taunt.

Fire Bolt

Cantrip Class
Evocation 1 action 120 ft. V, S

A ranged spell attack (+8) dealing 2d10 fire damage. The Shroud prefers this only when her illusions have been stripped away โ€” her 'honest' attack.

Minor Illusion

Cantrip Class
Illusion 1 action 30 ft. S, M

Creates a sound or an image of an object within range. Her bread and butter: footsteps in the reeds, a voice from the wrong direction.

Mage Hand

Cantrip Class
Conjuration 1 action 30 ft. V, S

A spectral hand that manipulates objects at range โ€” lifting the Mirror Sigil from a fallen foe, or stealing a key.

Mind Sliver

Cantrip Class
Enchantment 1 action 60 ft. V

A spell attack (+8) dealing 1d6 psychic damage and imposing a -1d4 penalty on the target's next saving throw before her next turn โ€” softening them for Hypnotic Pattern.

Prestidigitation

Cantrip Class
Transmutation 1 action 10 ft. V, S

Minor magical tricks โ€” she uses it to keep her mask pristine and to leave a lingering scent of moonpetal wherever she has been.

Shield

Level 1 Class
Abjuration 1 reaction Self V, S

+5 to AC until the start of her next turn, raising her effective AC to 18 when struck.

Disguise Self

Level 1 Class
Illusion 1 action Self V, S

She appears as anyone she has seen โ€” a city guard, Oracle Mira, even the player's sidekick. Inspection DC 16 to see through.

Illusory Script

Level 1 Class
Illusion 1 minute Touch S, M

She leaves false orders, forged Concord decrees, and misleading maps. Only designated creatures see the true message.

Mirror Image

Level 2 Class
Illusion 1 action Self V, S

Three duplicate images of the Shroud appear; attacks against her have a 1-in-3 chance of striking a duplicate instead. She casts this every fight, first thing.

Misty Step

Level 2 Class
Conjuration 1 bonus action Self V, M

Teleports 30 feet to an unoccupied space she can see. She uses this to slip behind cover when Mirror Step is exhausted.

Counterspell

Level 3 Class
Abjuration 1 reaction 60 ft. S

She interrupts a spell of 3rd level or lower automatically; higher-level spells require an ability check (DC 10 + spell level). She targets True Seeing and Detect Magic above all else.

Hypnotic Pattern

Level 3 Class
Illusion 1 action 120 ft. S, M

A twisting pattern of hypnotic color; each creature in a 30-ft. cube makes a Wisdom save (DC 16) or is Charmed and incapacitated. She uses this to hold the player still while her Mirrorlings close in.

Major Image

Level 3 Class
Illusion 1 action 120 ft. V, S, M

A large, moving, sound-making illusion โ€” a false dragon rising from the lake, a false rescue party, a false princess. Lasts 10 minutes with concentration.

Phantasmal Killer

Level 4 Class
Illusion 1 action 120 ft. V, S

A nightmare vision haunts the target (Wisdom save DC 16), dealing 4d10 psychic damage per failed save while she maintains concentration. Her primary offensive spell when hiding is no longer possible.

Greater Invisibility

Level 4 Class
Illusion 1 action Touch V, S

The target (usually herself) is Invisible for 1 minute with concentration. She casts this the moment her Mirror Image duplicates fall.

Mislead

Level 5 Class
Illusion 1 action Self S

She becomes Invisible and creates a visible illusory duplicate of herself that she controls remotely. Her signature move: the 'Shroud' the player has been fighting was Mislead the whole time.

Modify Memory

Level 5 Class
Enchantment 1 action 30 ft. V, S

She reshapes up to 5 minutes of a creature's memory (Wisdom save DC 16). This is how she 'proved' her loyalty to Nyxara โ€” and how she plans to make the Concord doubt its own Guardians.

Behind the character

Character Information

Beneath the polished silver mask, the Shroud of Mirrors is a woman who has spent twenty years rehearsing the person she pretends to be. Vessa Thaliad was the Lunar Concord's most gifted acolyte-spy, a girl who could walk into any room in Silvercourt and be remembered as someone else. Her talent for becoming nobody made her indispensable โ€” and when a handler she trusted ordered her to betray the Concord, then sold her name to the Umbral Court to cover his own tracks, she learned the lesson that defines her: identity is a leash, and only the masked are free.

She speaks in riddles not to be clever but because a straight sentence is a confession. Her charm is real, her warmth is real, and both are weapons she keeps sharpened because sincerity was the first thing that betrayed her. She is brilliant, patient, and quietly grieving, and the grief is the crack in the mirror. Her reflection in Mirror Lake smiles when she does not, and she has begun to fear it is the last honest part of her.

She tells herself she serves Nyxara by choice; the ledger in the Obsidian Spire that holds her true name tells her otherwise. If someone could show her that the betrayal she remembers is a lie she told herself, the Shroud might shatter โ€” or the woman behind it might finally step out of the glass.

Before the adventure

Character Background

Vessa Thaliad was born in a fishing village on the Silvercourt coast, the daughter of Thalia, a former priestess of the Lunar Concord who had withdrawn to the Moonwell Glade to raise her child away from court politics. Vessa grew up between two worlds: her mother's quiet devotions at the moonwell pool, and the bustling market town where she learned to read faces before she could read letters. At fourteen she was sent to Silvercourt for formal training, and within a year the Concord's spymasters noticed she could pass through a guarded gate by being, briefly, exactly the person the guard expected.

She was recruited into the Concord's shadow branch โ€” the Watchers of the Veil โ€” and for six years she was their finest asset: she mapped the Veiled Market's smuggling routes, exposed two Umbral cult cells, and once spent a month as a lady-in-waiting in a rival noble house without a single soul doubting her. Her handler during those years โ€” a senior Watcher whose name she has never learned to stop flinching at โ€” ran her harder each year, and when she began asking to go home to the glade, he gave her an order instead: plant evidence implicating Thalia in a plot against Princess Lumina's mother.

Vessa refused. Three nights later, Umbral Court agents took her from her quarters, and she woke in the Obsidian Spire to learn her handler had sold her name, her methods, and her family's location to Nyxara in exchange for his own erasure from the Court's records. Nyxara did not torture her. She did something worse: she offered Vessa the chance to become the thing the Concord had already decided she was.

'They watched you because of a prophecy,' the Queen said. 'I will never watch you. Wear the mask, and no one will ever know your face again.' Vessa accepted โ€” and then, to survive the person she had chosen to become, she cast Modify Memory on herself, softening the betrayal into a story where she had chosen the dark freely, with no handler, no order, no mother waiting in a glade.

For two decades the Shroud of Mirrors has been the Umbral Court's invisible hand in the Silvercourt Reach. She built the Web of Whispers, recruited June the Apothecary, corrupted the Moonwell (carefully, leaving one thread of lunar magic intact โ€” she tells herself it was strategic), and designed the abduction of Princess Lumina. She returned to Mirror Lake because the lake remembers what she has made herself forget: its reflection shows Vessa, a half-step behind, smiling the smile she buried.

Oracle Mira's childhood prophecy โ€” 'a door through which shadow will enter' โ€” haunts her more than Nyxara's brand. She has convinced herself that shattering the Concord's trust will prove the prophecy wrong, that chaos will prove she chose this. It hasn't worked yet. The mask is polished every night. The locket her mother lost in the glade is guarded by a demon she posted there herself, so that no one โ€” least of all she โ€” could ever bring it back.

Threads to follow

Unresolved Plots

  • The Shroud's reflection in Mirror Lake acts independently, smiling when she does not, and she no longer knows whether it is a curse, a fragment of her true self, or Nyxara's spy inside her own image.
  • One spy in her Web of Whispers has stopped answering questions honestly โ€” someone else has flipped an agent, and the Shroud does not know which courier, which city, or for whom.
  • She never delivered the final page of the princess's kidnapping report to Nyxara; it contains something about Lumina's secret power that she is holding back as her only insurance.
  • The predecessor who ordered her original betrayal still lives, hidden somewhere in the Concord's hierarchy, and she has spent years maneuvering the player toward them without ever explaining why.
  • A second locket, twin to Thalia's, exists somewhere in the Obsidian Spire โ€” Nyxara keeps trophies of every agent's origin, and the Shroud wants hers back before the eclipse makes her immortal and her past irrelevant forever.

Beneath the surface

Secrets

  • She was not simply corrupted by the Umbral Court as a child โ€” she was recruited by a Concord insider who later sold her to Nyxara when she became a liability, and she has never told anyone that her 'betrayal' was ordered before it was chosen.
  • The Modify Memory she is famous for casting on others was first cast on herself: her memory of the night she betrayed the Concord is false, softened by her own hand, and the true version is preserved only in the lake's reflection.
  • She deliberately failed to corrupt the Moonwell completely. The poison in the pool is her design, but she left one thread of lunar magic intact โ€” if the Moonstone is retrieved, the well can be saved, and she is the only person alive who knows exactly where the thread is anchored.

What haunts them

Fears

  • Being seen without her mask โ€” not because of her face, but because her face is her mother's face, and every mirror shows her what she abandoned.
  • That Oracle Mira's prophecy was true and self-fulfilling: that she was always a door for shadow, and that nothing she does now was ever her own choice.
  • The silence after the eclipse โ€” that when all light is devoured, there will be no reflections left, and she will finally have to exist as only one person with nowhere to hide.

What drives them

Aspirations

  • To stand before Thalia the Hermit unmasked and be recognized โ€” even if recognition means a blade or a curse โ€” because being known is the one thing she has forbidden herself for twenty years.
  • To take Nyxara's throne by out-scheming her: she believes the eclipse is a crude tool and that a patient shadow, woven through every mirror in the world, would rule without ever being seen.
  • To rewrite her own memory one final time โ€” not to soften the truth this time, but to make herself a person who would have refused the order, and then live as if that person had always existed.

Personal quest ยท 1

The Locket in the Water

Thalia the Hermit's silver locket lies in the Moonwell Grotto, guarded by a shadow demon the Shroud herself posted there. She knows what is inside it: a portrait of a girl with her own face, taken before the mask. The Shroud has quietly forbidden her spies from recovering it, and sabotages anyone who tries. If the player retrieves the locket and shows it to her mid-confrontation, the sight of her mother's face cracks her Veiled Mind ward for one minute โ€” the only window in which Modify Memory can be reversed and her true memories restored.

Current Stage

The player learns from Thalia that the locket exists and that her daughter was 'taken by shadows' decades ago.

Choice
Show the locket during the Mirror Lake battle
The Shroud falters, her mask's reflection weeps, and she drops the Mirror Sigil rather than fight for it.
Alternative
Destroy the locket to keep her broken
She senses its shattering across miles and hardens completely; the redemption path closes forever.
Mechanical Rewards
  • Redemption path: the Shroud becomes a controllable ally for the rest of the campaign
  • Locket of the Lost Daughter (uncommon, shield of faith 1/day)
  • If redeemed, she teaches the player a minor illusion trick: once per long rest, create one duplicate with Misty Visions that can take one hit
Narrative Rewards
  • Thalia's peace and the truth of the Shroud's identity
  • The Shroud's testimony against Nyxara, revealing the Eclipse Engine's weakness

Personal quest ยท 2

The Web Unraveled

The Shroud's spy network โ€” June the Apothecary's couriers, three guards, and one Concord archivist โ€” was her masterwork and her leash. Nyxara holds the ledger naming every agent, and the Shroud knows it. She tasks the player (through an intermediary, disguised as a Veiled Market broker) with infiltrating the Obsidian Spire's study to steal the ledger, intending to destroy it. What she does not say is that the ledger also contains her own true name and the record of the betrayal she committed โ€” the one thing standing between her and ever going home.

Current Stage

The player accepts the broker's contract without knowing the true client.

Choice
Deliver the ledger to the broker (the Shroud)
She burns it page by page before the player's eyes, then thanks them with unsettling sincerity.
Alternative
Read the ledger first and keep copies
The player learns Captain Theron's name, the Shroud's true name, and the true name of Queen Nyxara (Selene).
Mechanical Rewards
  • The ledger (contains Nyxara's true name โ€” required for the redemption ending)
  • The Shroud's network can be flipped: the player gains Web of Whispers benefits for one question per act
  • June's discount and healing supply
Narrative Rewards
  • The player learns who in the Concord is compromised before Act III
  • The Shroud's mask slips, literally and figuratively

Personal quest ยท 3

The Reflection That Smiles

The Shroud's reflection in Mirror Lake does not obey her. It smiles when she does not, lags a half-step behind, and lately it has been whispering to her in her own childhood voice. She believes it is a fragment of the Moonwell's curse โ€” or the last honest piece of Vessa Thaliad, trying to warn her. She cannot destroy it without destroying the lake's magic, which powers her Mirror Step. She manipulates events so that the player is drawn to the lake at the new moon, when the reflection is strongest, hoping someone honest can tell her what it wants.

Current Stage

The player witnesses the wrong reflection during the Mirror Lake approach and can investigate or ignore it.

Choice
Speak to the reflection
It shows the player the night of the betrayal โ€” the true version, not the one the Shroud remembers โ€” including who gave the order she blamed herself for.
Alternative
Shatter the lake's surface with the Echo Sigil or shatter spell
The reflection screams in Vessa's voice; the Shroud feels it die and fights with genuine fury.
Mechanical Rewards
  • Permanent insight advantage against her illusions
  • If redeemed, she refracts the Moonwell's blessing: the player gains +8 maximum hit points
  • The mirror of the past from the Reflection Cavern, which shows one true vision per day
Narrative Rewards
  • The full truth of her betrayal and who orchestrated it
  • A weapon to use against Captain Theron in the Veiled Ledger thread

Major Decision

Context

The Mask Comes Off

Choice Made
When the player presents Thalia's locket during their first true meeting, the Shroud must choose: kill the messenger and stay Nyxara's blade, or lower the mask for the first time in twenty years.
Impact

If she lowers the mask, she loses Veiled Mind's charm immunity permanently but regains access to her suppressed memories, unlocking Modify Memory's reversal and the redemption path. If she kills the messenger (or tries), she gains Nyxara's Eclipse Brand: her cantrips deal +1d6 necrotic, but she can never again enter moonlit ground without pain (disadvantage in bright light).

Major Decision

Context

The Sigil or the Sister

Choice Made
At the climax of the Mirror Lake battle, the Mirror Sigil is sinking into the deep water and one of her Mirrorlings โ€” the oldest one, the first reflection she ever animated, who speaks with Thalia's voice โ€” is drowning beside it. She can save only one.
Impact

Saving the Sigil keeps her at full mechanical power (advantage vs. illusions, Mirror Image 1/day) but kills the Mirrorling, and every Mirrorling she commands thereafter is hollow, losing False Echo. Saving the Mirrorling costs her the Sigil (which sinks to the lakebed for the player to claim) but grants her a new innate ability: Mirror Step no longer requires line of sight to the destination surface.

Major Decision

Context

Testimony at the Gate

Choice Made
If the player spares her life, the Shroud can appear at the Shadowed Gate offering to testify against Nyxara โ€” but testimony requires speaking her true name aloud before the gate, which will burn away her Umbral blessing and with it Mirror Step, Web of Whispers, and her Veiled Mind entirely.
Impact

If she testifies, she becomes Vessa Thaliad again: a plain-faced level 5 illusionist ally, losing all custom villain features but gaining the Moonwell's blessing (+20 max HP, resistance to necrotic) and the ability to cast true seeing once per day. If she refuses, she keeps her power but flees the campaign, returning as an enemy in the Obsidian Spire with two Mirrorling bodyguards.

Transformative Moment

Trigger

The locket is shown during combat

Transformation

Her mask's reflection betrays her, weeping; she loses the ability to lie for one scene and speaks only truth, however painful.

Mechanical Changes

Veiled Mind

Suspended for 1 minute; charm immunity off, thought-reading advantage off

The ward is anchored to her denial of her past; the locket pierces the denial.
Deception skill

All Deception checks automatically fail for the duration

She cannot sustain a lie while looking at her mother's face.

Transformative Moment

Trigger

Three or more illusions dispelled in one round

Transformation

Panic protocol: she flees to the Reflection Cavern and leaves the Mirror Sigil's echo as a taunt.

Mechanical Changes

Mirror Step

Usable once immediately even if exhausted, as an adrenaline surge

Flight is reflex older than loyalty.
Concentration

All active illusions end; she cannot cast illusion spells of 3rd level or higher for 1 hour

The collapse of her false reality shakes her grip on the Weave.

Ally

June the Apothecary

Relationship Handler and unwitting confidante
Influence 3/10
Loyalty 7/10

Shared History

The Shroud recruited June eight years ago, when June was a healer's apprentice caught smuggling medicine to plague-quarantined fishermen the Concord had written off. The Shroud โ€” then posing as a Veiled Market broker โ€” paid June's debts, protected her from arrest, and taught her that the Concord's light casts shadows of its own. June now runs the network's courier lines out of her apothecary shop, passing coded orders in potion bottles, and has never once seen her patron's true face.

She is the only person the Shroud visits regularly, every new moon, in the guise of a different customer each time, buying a single moonpetal tincture and leaving silver on the counter. June has begun keeping the silver coins in a jar labeled with the dates, half-suspecting, half-hoping, that her mysterious patron is someone who once saved her sister. The Shroud, for her part, finds June's shop the only place in Silvercourt where she is not performing โ€” a dangerous attachment Nyxara has already noticed and named as leverage.

Potential Breaking Points

  • If the player exposes June's courier work, the Shroud will burn the network rather than let June be arrested
  • June can be flipped with proof that her patron ordered the Moonwell's poisoning

Enemy

Oracle Mira

Threat Level 4/10
Conflict Type Ideological and existential

Personal Stakes

Mira is the one person the Shroud cannot deceive, and that makes her intolerable. Twenty years ago, when Vessa Thaliad was still a Concord acolyte, it was Mira โ€” then sighted โ€” who read the girl's fortune at Mirror Lake and pronounced her 'a door through which shadow will enter.' The Concord quietly began watching Vessa after that, and when she was later recruited by the Umbral Court, she told herself the prophecy had made her a prisoner first.

She has returned to Mirror Lake specifically to prove Mira right about nothing else: to corrupt the oracle's visions, feed her poisoned dreams through her spy network, and blind her fully before the eclipse. Mira, blind but truly seeing, has spent years countering the Shroud's illusions with honest sight, and it was Mira who taught the lake's water to resist false reflections. Each considers the other the cause of what she became. Only one of them can be right.

Possible Resolutions

  • The player can broker a confrontation where Mira publicly recants the prophecy, breaking its hold on the Shroud
  • The Shroud's death or redemption ends the poisoned dreams, saving what remains of Mira's sight

Faction

The Umbral Court

Standing 2/10

Influence

The Shroud is one of Queen Nyxara's three lieutenants, elevated after she personally delivered the plan to take Princess Lumina โ€” the sealed chambers, the shadow trail, the timing during the vigil changeover were all her designs. Her network is the Court's only reliable intelligence arm inside the Silvercourt Reach, and Nyxara rewards results while punishing hesitation with the Eclipse Brand, a shadow sigil burned into the Shroud's shoulder that flares when she disobeys.

But the Court's hierarchy is a knife room: the Shroud of Ash considers illusion 'coward's magic' and would take her territory if she fell, and the Shroud of Echoes owes her a debt from a joint operation she has never called in. She serves because the Court gave her power when the Concord gave her suspicion โ€” and because the ledger in Nyxara's study means defection means erasure. Every act of loyalty is also an act of self-preservation, and she knows Nyxara knows it.

Obligations

  • Deliver the Mirror Sigil's defense until the eclipse
  • Maintain the spy network and feed the Court intelligence on Concord movements
  • Prove the Moonwell's corruption is irreversible before the Eclipse Engine activates

Benefits

  • Access to the Reflection Cavern and the lake's corrupted magic
  • The Umbral Blessing that powers Mirror Step and Veiled Mind
  • Three Mirrorlings bound to her service
