A century ago, the guardian Selene served the Lunar Concord at the height of its power, patrolling the Shadowed Gate and singing the moonwell lullabies that kept the lunar wards alive. The Concord's histories say she was cast into the void for treachery. The truth is stranger: Selene discovered something beneath the gate โ a hunger in the dark that the wards were barely containing โ and leapt into it to seal it from within, knowing the order would rewrite her fall as betrayal rather than admit their wards had failed.
What she found down there did not devour her. It listened. It waited. And slowly, over years that felt like centuries, it offered her a different story: that the light she had served was the true prison, and the dark was simply what remained when lies were stripped away. She believed it, because believing it hurt less than believing she had thrown herself into hell for nothing. When she finally climbed back to the surface, she was Nyxara, and the first thing she did was take the name of the shield-sister she had left at the gate โ a theft of identity so intimate that the real Selene, now standing vigil at the Shadowed Gate, has never spoken of it.
Nyxara built the Umbral Court from the wreckage of other people's worst nights: the Shroud of Ash, a pyromancer who burned his own village; the Shroud of Mirrors, a child stolen and corrupted, who is Thalia the Hermit's lost daughter; the Shroud of Echoes, a bard silenced by a magical accident; and a fourth Shroud who refused her and was sealed away. She raised the Obsidian Spire in the Umbral Depths, a realm that is the surface world reflected and twisted, and began the long, patient work of the eclipse: corrupting the moonwells one by one, planting spies in Silvercourt, and building the Eclipse Engine โ a machine of shadow and stolen light that requires the living radiance of a moon-princess to run.
Kidnapping Princess Lumina was not mere villainy; Nyxara believes the girl's light, freely given or drained, is the final key to an eclipse that will prove the dark was never the enemy. Nyxara's magic flows from her pact with the void: three 6th-level pact slots, an eldritch blast that carries her chill, Devil's Sight that lets her see through the darkness she loves, and Umbral Step, the shadow-flight she uses to retreat when wounded.
Within reach of the Eclipse Engine she is nearly untouchable, drawing 20 temporary hit points each round. Her weaknesses are the cracks in her own story: the unread page in her Book of Shadows bearing her true name, the lullaby the Engine hums without her permission, the red sun above her throne that flickers in patterns she has begun to dread understanding. The Lunar Concord believes she is a monster to be slain.
Guardian Selene believes she is a friend who can be called home. Nyxara herself no longer knows which of them is right โ and that uncertainty, buried beneath a century of regal certainty, is the single thread by which the entire Umbral Court can be unraveled. In the Throne of Night, with the Engine behind her and the Guardian's blade before her, she will finally have to answer the question the void never asked her: was the darkness worth it?
