Behind the character

Character Information

Veskar Duskthorn is a level 10 Thief rogue whose undeath has sharpened rather than dulled his cunning. Slender and unnervingly graceful, he moves like smoke through the shadowed alleys of the city of Vaelmoor, where he works as a burglar, information broker, and occasional assassin for the criminal syndicate known as the Red Ledger. His pale skin, crimson eyes, and subtle fangs mark him as Sanguine-Born—a mortal cursed with vampiric thirst but not full undead transformation.

He feeds sparingly and by consent when possible, drinking from willing donors in exchange for protection, coin, or secrets, though hunger has driven him to darker bargains in lean years. Veskar is charming when it suits him, cold when it doesn't, and always three exits ahead of his enemies. Direct sunlight weakens him, so he conducts business at night, cultivating an aura of rumor and fear that often serves him better than steel.

He wields twin daggers and a crossbow, striking from darkness with devastating Sneak Attacks before vanishing up walls and across rooftops using his Spider Climb trait. His personality blends world-weary cynicism with a flicker of the idealist he once was; he protects the few mortals who have shown him kindness, and he quietly hunts the cult that made him what he is. His goals are simple: break his curse or master it, uncover the Red Ledger's true master, and never again be anyone's pawn.

Before the adventure

Character Background

Veskar Duskthorn was born in the river-town of Harlow's Reach, the third child of a locksmith who taught him the language of tumblers and pins before he could write. Poverty pressed early; by twelve he was picking locks for the Gutter Kings, a street gang that traded in stolen letters and forged seals. He was good—too good—and by sixteen he ran his own crew of rooftop thieves, robbing merchant vaults and leaving no trace but a chalked thorn mark.

His downfall came the night he accepted a contract from a hooded patron who paid in old gold: break into the crypt-vault beneath the Monastery of the Pale Veil and steal a sealed reliquary. Veskar succeeded, but the reliquary was a prison. When he cracked its seal in the dark, the thing inside—a starving vampire elder named Malachar the Unfed—poured itself into his veins instead of destroying him. Veskar woke at dusk changed: stronger, faster, seeing in darkness, but burned by dawn and haunted by a thirst that whispered constantly.

The Gutter Kings feared him; his family buried an empty coffin and grieved. He fled to Vaelmoor, the great gothic city where no one asks what you are if you're useful. There the Red Ledger syndicate found him, and Veskar rebuilt his life in shadow. Over a decade he mastered his condition—learning to feed with restraint, to fight with dagger and crossbow, to climb sheer walls like the vermin his enemies call him.

He became one of the Ledger's most reliable operators, though he never stopped investigating Malachar, who survived as a voice in his blood and, he suspects, a body somewhere in the world. Veskar's ideals are simple: freedom above all, debts repaid in full, and never letting hunger choose for him. His bonds are few but fierce: Sera, a blind apothecary who trades him blood tonics for protection; the memory of his family, whom he watches from rooftops but never approaches; and his hatred of Malachar.

His flaw is the thirst itself—and the colder flaw beneath it: he trusts no one fully, and loneliness is the price of the shadows he calls home. Now level 10 in his dark craft, Veskar seeks the means to either destroy his sire or sever the bond entirely, and he'll take any contract, cross any rooftop, and drain any vein that brings him closer.
