Synopsis

In Pine Hollow, a sleepy town, friends and relatives vanish one by one. Rumors spread of government experiments, strange lights, and forest dwellers that move with the fog. The kids discover rifts to the Upside-Down, a hostile mirror-dimension that feeds on fear and secrets. They must uncover the truth, seal the breaches, and save their town before the disappearances become permanent.

Setting

A tight-knit autumn town where grown-ups bicker over cover stories. The surrounding Whispering Woods hides danger, and the old quarry, abandoned factory, and hilltop observatory conceal clues. The Upside-Down bleeds through in flickers of light during storms, birthing warped creatures and echoes of memories.

Main Quest

Track the disappearances, gather evidence, locate and close each portal, and expose the conspirators behind the experiments while rescuing those trapped on the other side.

Darkfold incursions, mind-bending puzzles, environmental hazards, and ethically murky science. The PCs are kids/teens; emphasize cleverness, teamwork, and bravery over raw power. Skill checks: Investigation, Nature, Arcana, Stealth; incorporate improvised tools and low-to-mid magic items.

Rewards

Echo Stone fragments, protective talismans, allies who become recurring helpers, and the town’s gratitude that seeds future adventures.

Endgame

Close the final portal at the Observatory, reveal the conspirators, and bind the breaches with the Echo Stone, restoring normalcy to Pine Hollow and setting the stage for new mysteries.
