Antimagic Susceptibility
The rug is incapacitated while in the area of an antimagic field. If targeted by dispel magic, the rug must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against the caster's spell save DC or fall unconscious for 1 minute.
Damage Transfer
While it is grappling a creature, the rug takes only half the damage dealt to it, and the creature grappled by the rug takes the other half.
False Appearance
While the rug remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from a normal rug.
Actions
Smother
Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one Medium or smaller creature. Hit: The creature is grappled (escape DC 13). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, blinded, and at risk of suffocating, and the rug can't smother another target. In addition, at the start of each of the target's turns, the target takes 10 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage.
Reference Text
A rug of smothering is a magical construct that appears as an ordinary rug, often found in dungeons, ruins, or laboratories. It is created through animation magic and serves as a trap or guardian. The rug lies motionless until a creature steps onto it, then it springs to life, wrapping itself around the victim and attempting to suffocate them. It is unaligned and acts purely on magical programming, with no consciousness or intent beyond its function. The rug is immune to poison and psychic damage, and it is unaffected by many conditions that would hinder living creatures. It has blindsight out to 60 feet, allowing it to detect creatures even in darkness, but it is blind beyond that radius. The rug's construction is typically a thick, woven carpet, often ornate, which helps it blend in with its surroundings. It is a Large construct, capable of enveloping Medium or smaller creatures. The rug is vulnerable to antimagic effects; in an antimagic field it becomes incapacitated, and dispel magic can render it unconscious temporarily. Its primary method of attack is to smother its target, grappling and restraining them while dealing bludgeoning damage each turn. The rug's damage transfer ability means that when it is grappling a creature, damage dealt to the rug is split between the rug and the grappled creature, making it a dangerous opponent in close quarters. The rug does not speak or understand any language, and it has no ability to communicate. It is a mindless construct, driven solely by its magical purpose.
