Actions

Life Drain

Melee Spell Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (4d10) necrotic damage, and the target's hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. If a creature's hit point maximum is reduced to 0 in this way, it dies.

Horrifying Visage

Each creature of the Gloomspire Wraith's choice that is within 30 feet and aware of it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Monster Description

The Gloomspire Wraith is a malevolent spirit birthed from the tormented souls of those who died in great agony. With its incorporeal form, it drifts through the material realm, seeking to drain the life force from the living. This wraith is adorned in tattered remnants of dark, regal attire, and its presence is often preceded by a chilling breeze that carries the mournful cries of the damned. Its hollow eyes, glowing with a sickly green hue, pierce through the darkness, instilling terror in all who gaze upon it. It is said that this wraith wanders the ruins of ancient battlegrounds, forever searching for the souls lost to war. The air around it seems to darken and grow colder, as if the very essence of life is being sapped away.

Monster behavior

The Gloomspire Wraith prefers to strike from the shadows, using its incorporeal movement to phase through walls and surprise unsuspecting adventurers. It typically avoids direct confrontations, using its walls and shadows for concealment. Once it identifies a target, it will employ its Life Drain attack, often while leveraging its Horrifying Visage to frighten and weaken its opponents. Skilled in evasion, it often retreats to the Ethereal Plane to regroup and launch surprise attacks again. It is relentless in its pursuit of souls, quickly adapting to the tactics of its enemies, resulting in a nightmarish encounter for adventurers. The Wraith is particularly vengeful toward those that have trespassed on its haunted grounds. Should it be cornered, it will not hesitate to use its mobility to escape rather than fight to the death.

Ecology

In the ecosystem, the Gloomspire Wraith serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of war and suffering. As it drains the life force from the living, it repurposes this energy to sustain its existence. This cycle of death is integral for the balance of the undead realm, where it also serves as a warning against those who disturb the resting places of the dead. Some necromancers seek out Gloomspire Wraiths, hoping to bind their essence for use in dark rituals or as guardians of their lairs. By maintaining the fear and despair it creates, the Wraith continues to grow more potent, feeding off the chaos left in the wake of violence and hate.

History

The history of the Gloomspire Wraith can be traced back to ancient times when kingdoms crumbled in wars sparked by greed and ambition. Legends speak of a great battle between noble houses, where blood spilled freely and the cries of the dying echoed across the land. As the slaughter continued, the spirits of the fallen became enraged, twisted by pain and betrayal. From this chaos, the first Gloomspire Wraith emerged, feeding off the agony and despair left in its wake. It became an avenger of those who perished without peace, and its wraiths multiplied over the years as more souls succumbed to violence. As the ages passed, tales of the Gloomspire Wraith spread, weaving into the lore of haunted locations. They are considered omens of death and despair, haunting places where blood has soaked the soil, transforming into dark areas of untold horrors. Scholars and adventurers have attempted to summon and communicate with these wraiths, but few return unharmed. As time goes on, the Gloomspire Wraith remains a potent symbol of the legacy of suffering.
