Kestrel’s earliest memory is of a crowded market square where sound was currency. He learned to imitate voices and noises with frightening accuracy, a skill that earned him coins and, more often, the kind of trouble that follows a bird that can mimic guards calling for “the cages” or “the loot.” He grew up among a troupe of touring musicians who sailed between coastal towns, entertaining sailors and merchants alike with songs that spoke of distant harbors, storms survived, and lovers lost to the sea. As a hatchling, he quickly learned the art of listening more than speaking, measuring the tempo of a crowd and the rhythm of a ship—every creak of the hull, every shout from the captain, every note that coaxed a child to sleep. His kenku heritage forced him to rely on mimicry to communicate, which initially isolated him from peers who did not understand the artistry behind his gift. Yet in time, he found his voice not in words but in sound, using music as both shield and sword. The Dear Calypso offered him a second family: a band of misfits who sing, curse, and fight as one.
