Falrose School of the Arcane: First-Year Gambit

Overview: Falrose's first-years learn under pressure when an ambitious upperclassman, Kaelin Drath, plans to perform the forbidden Ascendant Oath. The ritual would bend the school’s wards to his will. The players, fresh adventurers, must uncover Kaelin’s scheme and stop him before midnight.

Main Quest: Recover three ritual anchors—Lumen Crystal (Star Vault Observatory), Binder’s Quill (Library’s Restricted Wing), and Sage Lily (Greenhouse of Moonglow). Use them to disrupt the Ascendant Oath in the Chamber of Echoes atop Falrose Tower. If Kaelin finishes the rite, the wards collapse and danger spills into the city.

Side Quest: A missing first-year’s familiar—a luminescent sprite—was drawn into a warded trap by Kaelin. Freeing it yields a clue to Kaelin’s motive and grants leverage to confront him.

Locations & Challenges: Great Hall (glowing glyphs reveal clues), Library (puzzle shelves and illusion guards), Greenhouse of Moonglow (sentient vines and timed growth puzzles), Observatory (star vault and the final stand). Expect 2–3 skirmishes, skill checks (Arcana, Investigation, Persuasion), and rune puzzles that require teamwork.

Climax: As midnight nears, the players confront Kaelin in the Chamber of Echoes. They must disrupt the rite, seal the wards, and either persuade Kaelin to abandon his plan or subdue him.

Rewards: House points, a minor magic item—the Quill of Quickening (one use per rest to hasten a spell), and a professor’s recommendation for a future internship. Successful thwarting grants XP toward level advancement and lasting ties with Falrose faculty.

DM Notes: Tailor encounters to 4-5 players. Provide hints via professors if the party stalls; if they move too slowly, introduce a time-pressure ward to raise the stakes.
