Dragon Reactor

Dragon Reactors are living engines—humanoid forms with draconic lungs and wings that convert inhaled air and latent draconic energy into blasts of elemental force, wing attacks, and a hardened resistance to magic. They are nimble, rugged, and designed to be close-to-mid-range duelists who can rapidly reposition themselves and punish spellcasters with staunch resilience.

If an attack or effect reduces your SLP to 0 you fall unconscious for 2 rounds. At the end of those two rounds you regain SLP equal to half your maximum. This rule applies to voluntary and involuntary SLP expenditure (including bolts and breath cones).

Transformations

Draconic Ascendance
1 minute 200 × your level SLP Level 18

A sustained transformation that amplifies your draconic powers. See 'Draconic Ascendance' feature: significant increases to wing damage, breath cone damage, and temporary immunities. Lasts 1 minute; massive SLP cost and limited uses.

Changes:

Wing damage dice increase by two steps, Breath Cone base damage +6d6, Immunity to chosen elemental damage type while transformed, Speed +10 ft.

Class Features

Unarmored Draconic Defense (Level 1)

While you wear no armor and don’t use a shield, your AC equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Constitution modifier. You can use a shield, but doing so prevents you from benefiting from natural wing strikes as unarmed attacks.

Draconic Lungs (Secondary Lung Points) (Level 1)

You have a lung reservoir used to fuel your draconic attacks and resistances. Your maximum Secondary Lung Points (SLP) = 100 × your level. You can spend these points to fire bolts, fuel breath cones, or activate certain features. If an effect or attack fully drains your SLP (reducing it to 0), you are knocked unconscious for 2 rounds; at the end of those 2 rounds you wake with SLP equal to half your normal maximum. You regain SLP by the Lung Management actions (see below) or by a long rest.

Lung Management (Recover SLP) (Level 1)

You can recover SLP in three ways (these are distinct, you may use one per turn unless a feature says otherwise): - Bonus Action: Force a breath in and recover SLP equal to 10 × your level. - Action: Deep inhalation and focus; recover SLP equal to 20 × your level. - Full Turn/Minute Focus (expend your action and bonus action and use your movement for the turn): recover SLP equal to 30 × your level. Using these counts as you using the listed action economy; a long rest brings you to full SLP.

Bound Wings / Unbound Wings (toggle) (Level 1)

You begin with draconic wings folded against your back (bound). As a bonus action you can unbind your wings or fold them. While wings are unbound you are lighter and gain access to special wing attacks and (at later levels) limited flight. Folding or unfolding your wings is a silent visible motion and may attract attention. While unbound you have -1 to Stealth checks unless you have features that say otherwise.

Wing Strikes (Level 1)

When your wings are unbound, you can use them to make special unarmed attacks. These count as unarmed strikes for the purposes of features that require unarmed strikes. - Short-range Swipe: Melee Attack, 5 ft., 1d6 slashing damage (finesse). No SLP cost. - Long-range Stab (Wing Lunge): Melee Attack, reach 10 ft., 1d4 piercing damage. No SLP cost. These attacks gain an additional damage die at levels 3, 5, 8, 10, 13, 15, 18, and 20 (see 'Scaling' below).

Wing Damage Scaling (Level 1)

Each of your wing strike damage dice increases by one die on the listed levels. For example, the short-range swipe begins at 1d6; at level 3 it becomes 2d6, at level 5 it becomes 3d6, and so on. The long-range stab similarly increases its dice pool (1d4 → 2d4 → …).

Lunging Spin (bonus-action follow-up) (Level 8)

Starting at 8th level: after you make a Wing Lunge (the long-range stab) on your turn, you may use a bonus action to perform a spinning wing follow-up that deals slashing damage to creatures within 5 feet of you. At 8th level this spin deals 4d4 slashing damage. This spin increases by one damage die at the same levels that wing strikes increase (3, 5, 8, 10, 13, 15, 18, 20). You add your Dexterity modifier to the damage. You may use Lunging Spin only if your wings are unbound.

Breath Bolts (Ranged Bolt Attack) (Level 1)

You can fire bolts of draconic elemental energy as a ranged special attack. Each bolt deals 1d6 force damage (type changes with subclass). When you use this attack you may fire a number of bolts up to your level (minimum 1). Each bolt requires SLP equal to 10 × your level to produce (that is, one bolt costs 10 × level SLP; firing n bolts costs n × 10 × level SLP). A single bolt has a range of 60/240 feet and requires an attack roll (ranged spell attack equivalent). You may split bolts among targets as you like, all in the same action. If you lack the SLP for the number of bolts you declared, you may fire only as many bolts as your remaining SLP allows. Bolts are subject to the SLP drain rule (draining to 0 knocks you unconscious—see Draconic Lungs).

Resource Cost: Each bolt costs 10 × your level SLP

Arcane Resistance (Rage Resistance to Magic) (Level 2)

Starting at 2nd level you gain hardened resistance to magical assaults. - While you have at least 1 SLP, you have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects that require a save. - In addition, whenever you would take damage from a spell or magical effect, you reduce that damage by an amount equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum 1). At 14th level this reduction increases to twice your Constitution modifier. Using Arcane Resistance does not expend SLP; it functions as long as you have >0 SLP.

Draconic Roar (Fear, Area) (Level 3)

Starting at 3rd level you can exhale a terrifying roar of elemental air as an action. Choose a 15-foot cone. Each creature in the cone must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency + your Con mod) or be frightened of you until the end of your next turn. You may expend SLP equal to 20 × your level to increase the cone to 30 feet and impose disadvantage on saves. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all uses on a long rest.

Resource Cost: Optional: expend 20 × your level SLP to increase cone and impose disadvantage

Wing-Assisted Mobility (limited flight) (Level 6)

At 6th level you gain limited flight while your wings are unbound. You have a flying speed equal to your walking speed while you are not wearing heavy armor. If you are knocked prone while flying you fall as normal. You can hover only if your SLP is at least 10% of max. If an effect causes you to fall (including being knocked unconscious via SLP drain), you immediately lose any benefits of flight until you spend an action to regain stable footing and at least 10 × your level SLP.

Elemental Affinity (Level 3)

At 3rd level you select an elemental affinity that defines the element of some of your draconic attacks (breath bolts, breath cones, later subclass features). Options: Fire (Ember), Lightning (Storm), Cold (Crystal), Acid/Poison (Verdant). Your Bolt damage changes from force to your element's damage type for any bolt you fire that you declare as being of your affinity. Many subclass features expand on this choice.

Overdrive (Overcharge SLP) (Level 10)

Starting at 10th level, you can overdrive your lungs in a single action: spend a full action and all remaining bonus actions this turn, and you may spend up to half your maximum SLP to gain one of two benefits (your choice): - Empowered Breath: Your next Breath Cone or Breath Bolt attack this turn deals additional damage equal to twice the SLP spent (applied as flat damage total) and confers advantage on attack rolls for the bolts. - Draconic Fortitude: You gain temporary hit points equal to the SLP spent and gain resistance to all damage until the start of your next turn. Once you use Overdrive, you cannot use it again until you finish a short or long rest unless you expend a spell slot of 3rd level or higher to reactivate it (if your group allows magic items/campaign house rules you can substitute similar costs).

Resource Cost: Spend up to half your max SLP

Breath Cone (area-of-effect breath) (Level 5)

At 5th level you gain a breath cone attack as an action. You expend SLP equal to 30 × your level to unleash a 30-foot cone (or 60-foot cone if you expend 60 × your level) of your elemental affinity. Damage on a failed save: 6d6 of your element at the smaller cost, 12d6 at the larger cost (Dexterity or Constitution save as dictated by DM for flavor; default is Dexterity to avoid or half on a successful save). Damage increases at DM's discretion or via subclass features. Using the breath cone that reduces SLP to 0 triggers the drain unconscious rule.

Resource Cost: 30 × your level SLP (small cone) or 60 × your level SLP (large cone)

Tailoring the Breath (precision bolt) (Level 4)

At 4th level you learn to shape elemental bolts with precision. You can spend an extra 10 × your level SLP when firing Breath Bolts to transform each bolt to have one of the following effects (your choice per bolt): impose disadvantage on the target's next saving throw, reduce the target's speed by 10 feet for 1 round, or force the target to make the saving throw at disadvantage. Effects and availability depend on your elemental affinity and may be resisted by immunity or special traits.

Resource Cost: 10 × your level SLP per modified bolt

Prerequisite: Breath Bolts

Draconic Recovery (Self-stabilize) (Level 9)

Starting at 9th level, if you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright while you have at least 1 SLP, you can expend 20 × your level SLP to drop to 1 hit point instead. You can use this feature once per long rest. At 17th level, you can use it twice per long rest.

Resource Cost: 20 × your level SLP (to prevent falling to 0 HP)

Draconic Ascendance (Transformation) (Level 18)

At 18th level you can assume a more fully draconic aspect for up to 1 minute. As an action, you expend 200 × your level SLP to transform: your size does not change but your speed increases by 10 feet, your wing damage dice each increase by two steps (counting the same progression used earlier), your Lunging Spin damage gains +3 dice, your Breath Cone's base damage increases by 6d6, and you gain immunity to your chosen elemental damage type. While ascended you cannot cast spells (if you have any) and you must end the transformation early if you fall to 0 SLP. Once you use this feature you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.

Resource Cost: 200 × your level SLP

Unleashed Reactor (20th-level capstone) (Level 20)

At 20th level, when you take a short rest you may spend at least 100 × your level SLP to calibrate your lungs. If you do, for the next 24 hours you gain: +2 to attack rolls with wing strikes and Breath Bolts, advantage on Strength checks to break or shove, and you can use a Breath Cone at half the SLP cost once per long rest.
