Monster Description

Kazan Khan, once a feared conqueror of the Neuroni Horde, now exists as a vast ghostly head, imprisoned within the swirling illusions of an elaborate palace. This magnificent yet terrifying structure is a twisted reflection of the glory days of his brutal rulership, filled with the haunting echoes of past victories and the screams of the slain. Both awe-inspiring and horrific, the palace itself appears to be alive with slithering shadows and disorienting images that can trap the minds of intruders, leading them to madness or despair. Within these walls, Kazan’s presence looms large, amplifying his rage and sorrow as he remembers days of power, now lost forever. The remnants of his horde still roam the plains of Barovia, fierce yet reduced in number, forever loyal but diminished from their full, terrifying potential. Kazan commands respect and fear from those who dare to linger in his domain, whether it is through whispered tales of his ruthless conquests or the dread that follows his name.

Monster behavior

In combat, Kazan Khan utilizes his illusionary palace to manipulate and control his enemies, forcing them into a sense of unending dread and fear. He revels in instilling terror, often striking from the shadows of his own creation while commanding denizens of the palace to act on his behalf. He will use tactics that involve creating illusions to hide himself, thus making it challenging for his enemies to pinpoint his location. He will summon ghastly figments of his former warriors, leading the charge and overwhelming foes with sheer numbers, forcing them to scatter in panic. If pressed, Kazan will not shy away from close combat, utilizing his devastating soul siphon to regain strength and reassert his dominance. However, he does well to retreat if things turn against him, ensuring he does not lose the remnants of his power.

Ecology

As an undead entity, Kazan Khan’s existence defies natural laws. His very essence is tied to the torment and despair he inflicted upon the living during his time as a conqueror. The landscape around him reflects his misery, forever scarred by the carnage of his past endeavors. He feeds off negative energy, particularly the fear and grief of those who fall under his illusionary sway. His presence attracts other malevolent spirits in the area, forming a sort of ghostly echo of his former horde, creating a feedback loop of haunting terror and sorrow. His very essence taints the land, leaving remnants of his rule as a reminder of the suffering he left in his wake.

History

Kazan Khan was birthed into a life of violence, destined to unify the Neuroni Horde through sheer brute force and dominion over those who stood in his way. He carved a bloody path across Barovia, his reputation growing with each city his horde razed and each civilization that succumbed to his cruelty. It is whispered that he had made a pact with the demon lord Irlek Khan, trading souls for power, balancing his rise with the promise of chaos that would one day ensue. His ambition blinded him to the plot laid by the Baal Verzi, leading to his downfall. When he fell, the spirits of those he had wronged rejoiced, ushering a fleeting moment of relief across the land. However, death did not liberate Kazan; instead, it turned him into an insatiable phantom, forever trapped in the illusions of his own making, replaying the moment of betrayal.

Haunting the vast plane in Barovia, Kazan now echoes the cries of the past and instills fear into the hearts of the Neuroni, who still honor him as their great leader. Their loyalty, however, includes ghosts of their ancestors, those who fell to his malevolence, trapped in an eternal dance of power and retribution. Kazan Khan continues to seek something—perhaps revenge on those who conspired against him or a return to his former glory—and will not rest until he claims what he believes is rightfully his.
